Short test: Peugeot 508 2.0 BlueHDi 180 Allure

A look at history, however, says the 508 has been on the market since 2011, which seems a bit at odds with the claim about the older generation. But it’s not about years, it’s more about ideas. The Five Hundred and Eight is seen to belong to a generation of cars that has not yet been designed with modern connectivity and digital data display in mind. Above the center console is a color LCD, which is smaller than you would expect (only 18 cm), multi-finger gesture control is just a wish, the screen between the gauges is only monochrome, connectivity with smartphones is very limited, as the 508 does not know AndroidAut or Apple CarPlay (so it is necessary to download applications from the poorer Peugeot store with them on the system in the car, instead of using applications from a smartphone).

The whole experience is more analog than digital, and this at a time when some competitors have taken the digital step forward. Another reason to say 508 is a gentleman, that is, a gentleman who uses a mobile phone but has not yet come to terms with smartphones and everything they offer you. Now that we have clarified why the 508 is a gentleman on the downside, we can tackle another side - for example, the excellent two-liter turbodiesel, which with 180 'horsepower' is more than powerful enough to be such a 508 among the fastest on the highway, and which on the other hand, it provides favorable low consumption.

Although the power is transferred to the wheels by a classic automatic transmission (which is worse from the point of view of consumption than, for example, two-clutch technology), consumption on the standard lap was a favorable 5,3 liters, and the test was a bunch of fast highway kilometers, among which the 508 felt as at home, also affordable 7,1 liters. At the same time, the engine (and its sound insulation) also boasts smoothness, smooth running and moderation in the amount of noise transmitted to the cabin. There are also much louder competitors in the market. The chassis is focused primarily on comfort, which was exemplary despite the 18-inch extra wheels and suitably low-profile tires.

It often happens that we write that it would be better if we stayed with the standard smaller rims and tires with higher sides, but here the compromise between appearance (and position on the road) and comfort is good. The same goes for driving: such a 508 is not an sports car, of course, but its chassis and steering are proof that Peugeot still knows how to hit the middle ground between sportiness and comfort. Only on short sharp transverse humps can vibrations be transmitted to the cab, and this is also due to what we wrote a few lines higher: extra wheels and tires. The longitudinal displacement of the driver's seat could be slightly longer for drivers taller than 190 centimeters, but overall the experience in the cab is not to be complained about either in the front or in the rear. The trunk is large, but of course it has a typical limousine limitation - a smaller opening to access it and limited magnification. If that bothers you, reach for the caravan.

The equipment of the test 508 was rich, in addition to the standard level Allure also had leather upholstery, projection screen, JBL sound system, blind spot monitoring system and headlights in LED technology. The latter could also be omitted from the list of equipment, as they cost as much as 1.300 euros, and the driver, especially the oncoming driver, can get on the nerves with a very pronounced blue-purple edge (which we also noticed this year on test 308). They are strong and shine well, but everything that illuminates this edge reflects bluish - and you will often replace white roadside reflectors or reflections from a glass bus station with, for example, the blue lights of an emergency vehicle. Of course, rich equipment also means a rich price, there is no free lunch: such a 508 costs around 38 thousand according to the price list. Yes, sir again.

evaluation

  • In fact, you don't even need most of the surcharges that raised the price of the car from 32 to 38 thousand. And this second price sounds much better - but it still includes a lot of equipment, including a navigation device.
