Short test: Audi A3 Sportback 1.6 TDI Attraction Comfort Edition

Audi?

We know: prestigious brand of VAG Group. A3? We know that the technique is very similar to the technique of golf, but writing "golf" is not entirely politically correct. The tech is worrying, the most popular product on it may indeed be the Golf (if it's not an Octavia ...), but that doesn't mean it's “his”.

So: The Audi A3 is (still) a prestigious product from this group on their probably the most common platform. Lower middle class.

It doesn't matter, after all: if the mechanical base is worthy of the Audi name, it could also be called the Octavia. And there is no doubt: even when you sit in the A3, it turns out again that the cabin designed for them, also based on a mechanical base (platform), is probably one of the most versatile.

It not only covers a wide range of driver heights, but also adapts perfectly to their width (and length) and, most importantly, to their tastes. In other words: when you first get into an A3, the likelihood that you will quickly get to know him as a driver and feel good about him is very high. From the driving position to the steering wheel levers that could easily become the standard in the automotive world.

The difference in the level of prestige (compared to cousins and cousins) is, of course, most noticeable on the inside; the materials are excellent in appearance and touch (here you can only argue about the fabric of the covers, since it is too rough for the bare skin of the elbows), impeccable workmanship, ergonomics and appearance are unobtrusively elegant. Highlighted by matte black, which also proved to be an equivalent alternative to glossy black, but arguably even better in practical terms.

The A3 mechanics you see in the photos are fuel-efficient options: a 1,6-liter TDI, Stop / Start system, an arrow that kindly tells you when to shift (and in which gear) to reduce fuel consumption, plus a polite warning. Note the toggle arrow on the trip computer screen if this (arrow) is not accidentally visible. Plus additional information in the on-board computer, how much more the engine consumes if the air conditioner is running.

The engine has a good dose of torque to drive its carriage with dignity, and it also loves to turn: in second gear it's easy up to 5.000, in third also with a lot of effort, and in fourth it's up to 4.000. the number XNUMX is already the maximum.

It doesn't say anything, that's enough, from the user's point of view it's actually the least friendly that there are only five gears in the gearbox, which means it's a little awkward to start (loaded car, lean, quick start when turning left) that the gears are less overlap intensively (slopes) and that at higher speeds (if you are just in Germany) the engine rotates too fast.

The same is with tires: our restrictions and fines are at the highest level, otherwise road criminals will also "roll" on dry corners in fast corners, and then the reaction of the car to the command through the steering wheel will not be linear, so the more I turn, the more the car turns. But exemplary drivers will never notice.

Because you buy such an A3 for a reason: to drive an economical (and environmentally friendly) program. In a handsome carriage of notorious prestige. So why not?

evaluation

  • S3 is somewhere on the other side, but at the time we live in, and with the projection that promises us, it is exactly that, so motorized, by far the most intelligent. It is far from slow, but economical. And since this is an Audi, it is more prestigious, but significantly less practical than the equally large Golf. Not to mention Octavia.

We praise and reproach

motor: power consumption, torque

steering levers, on-board computer

materials in the interior

driving position

gearbox too long (five gears in total)

tires (for increased driving requirements)

outside rearview mirrors too low

prefabricated fabric
