Brief Test: BMW 5 Series 530d xDrive M Sport (2021) // Best Diesel Fuel Choice

The tremendous efforts that corporations are investing in cleaning diesel engines have only been partially effective. No, technically not, the diesels are of the latest generation and comply with the regulations. Euro6dTemp so clean that they outperform gasoline engines in some emissions, especially the low content of nitrogen oxides, soot particles - CO2 emissions are in any case lower. However, they were blacklisted, which is also understandable due to a kind of twisted logic, since the installation of such demanding exhaust control systems becomes an expensive joke. On the other hand, emissions of the hated greenhouse gas CO2 are rising again.

Thus, the rejection of diesel engines is only partly logical, but nevertheless it happens. Fortunately, some manufacturers are adept at resisting this, and buyers are certainly right.. The three-liter engine in this sedan is already one of those that undoubtedly belong to a large sedan, especially when it comes to a premium subscription. BMW offers this powerful machine in the top five as standard with an exceptional automatic transmission, with all-wheel drive brought in by the Xdrive label at an additional cost.

Well, with the kind of bearish torque this diesel can handle, the smart Xdrive is almost essential. It really costs almost three thousand, but considering the total cost of the car, this is no longer such a big expense. First of all, the advantage of this drive is that the five still leaves a slightly accentuated rear-wheel drive that also feels behind the wheel, although not as pronounced as in the smaller (and sportier) models. However, this is enough to counteract understeer in the vast majority of cases.

This is, of course, a convenient feature of the sedan, which is now almost five meters in size, especially if its appearance promises driving dynamics. With the timeliness and ease of turning through the studs, it quickly became clear to me that the five-meter sedan also comes with four-wheel steering (again at an additional cost) that's less aggressive than the athletes, so it's easier to get used to.

This six-cylinder engine, which is not even the most powerful in its offer, is capable of producing a serious 210 kW (286 hp) and an equally impressive 650 Newton-meters of torque. Even more elegant is the incremental curve, which is otherwise nicely framed.but starts to rise steeply below 1.500 rpm, so the transmission has enough work just above idle.... And this one really fits perfectly with the torque transfer of this diesel, so I could only touch my back pleasantly when the needle on the tachometer (fully digitized, of course) went up close to the 1.500 mark.

Of course, it also goes more decisively, more energetically, especially with the chosen sports driving program. Then the additional grip at low ambient temperatures will be a balm for driver independence. The system distributes power quickly and efficiently, it can even rely a little on the rear, which thus helps in cornering, but nothing more than that will never happen.

Of course, this is a BMW, but this is a sedan, so I did not particularly expect and did not look for really sporting attributes.... But with that much torque, it's also nearly two tons, as much as a well-equipped specimen can have, a small snack for a six-cylinder engine. However, all the weight, including the additional 60 kilograms of drive, is a little familiar for sharper corners, where even flexible dampers (an optional but highly recommended choice) can't completely eliminate all that weight, which is also felt on the steering. wheel when the heel is strongly against the outer edges of the tires.

However, I dare say that buyers of such a limousine, albeit with a blue and white sign, are unlikely to try to perform such abrupt maneuvers. Nine tenths of the time, the 530d Xdrive will be, above all, a very pleasant and comfortable companion that will not erase the smile from the driver's lips, even in a slightly more difficult corner.

The interior and ergonomics are, of course, unique areas in which BMW knows how to impress, especially the seats and seats. It's still a mystery to me how rigid and rigid their digital dashboard is these days. That's right, its centerpiece and dashboard are also a matter of taste, especially with a lot of fast physical switches.but neither the material, nor the workmanship, nor the finish can be challenged with a premium feel. Many additional candies add a lot to this as well.

Thus, the final price, if the future owner plays too much with crossovers with (seductive) options, can also jump pretty much over a hundred thousand - like with a test model. Which, in all honesty, is also the only major offense...
