Short test: Ford Mondeo Vignale 2.0 TDCi 110 kW Powershift wagon

At the same time, some are ready to offer more, others - less. Ford falls somewhere in between as it doesn't offer special models to customers, but only select models with the best equipment. On average, Vignal equipment costs about five thousand euros. Of course, as is the case with regular versions, you can pay extra for additional equipment, which significantly increases the cost of the car. Regardless of accessories, Vignale still brings some exclusivity.

Why Vignale at all? The answer lies in 1948 when he wanted Alfredo Viñale offer drivers something more. At the time, at the age of 35, he founded the Carrozzeria Alfredo Vignale, which first modernized Fiat and then Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Ferrari and Maserati. In 1969, Alfredo sold the company to the Italian automaker De Tomas. The latter was mainly involved in the production of prototypes and racing cars, as well as Formula 1 racing cars. De Tomaso also ran the Carrozzeria Ghia company, which he 1973 bought a Ford. The latter then called the more powerful versions Ghia for many years, and Vignale faded into oblivion. The name was briefly revived in 1993 when it featured a study of the Lagonda Vignale at the Geneva Motor Show Aston Martin (then owned by Ford), and in September 2013, Ford decided to revive the Vignale name and offer something more.

Mondeo was the first to boast the Vignale badge, and in Slovenia, buyers are also thinking of a luxury version. S-Max in Edgea.

Comfort one notch higher

The test Mondeo showed the essence of the Vignale upgrade. Special color, prestigious interior, automatic transmission and powerful engine. It is clear that the price difference between the base and test machine shows that the test machine had a lot of additional equipment, but such a machine still deserves it. At the same time, the Mondeo Vignale is the first Ford car with a production system. Ford Active Noise Cancellation, which, with special glass and abundant sound insulation, ensures that the car will have as little extraneous sounds and noise as possible. This does not mean that the engine is no longer heard inside, but less so than in regular Mondeos.

As already mentioned, the test car was equipped with an automatic transmission. Powershiftwhich brings freshness between automatic transmissions. In conjunction with a powerful two-liter turbodiesel, it works moderately and calmly, without excessive squeak (especially when starting off), while there is the possibility of sequential shifting using the gear levers. Otherwise, the engine is powerful enough to make the ride as sporty and dynamic as the driver wants. Of course, for many, fuel consumption will be important. On average, the test required 7 liters per 100 kilometers at a standard flow rate. 5,3 liters per 100 kilometers... The latter is not quite low, and the former is not the highest, so we can rank Ford's drivetrain in the middle.

Special care for the driver and car - but at an additional cost

The situation is different with the interior. While the Vignale spoils the hardware, you still expect more from the interior as other upholstery doesn't really matter much. The seats are also a concern, especially the height of the seat section, because the built-in heating and cooling systems make the seat position (too) high, hence taller drivers may have problems.

It is true, however, that the mission of Vignale equipment is not only in equipment but also in services. During the first five years of ownership, the customer is entitled to three complimentary exterior and interior cleanings per year at Ford sales and service centers, and three free regular services... At the time of purchase, the customer can also choose to receive a Premium at a service station (surcharge of 370 euros), within which he can transport the car to the service station and back.

But if we take a look at the price list, we quickly find that the difference in price (approximately 5.000 euros) between the Titanium and Vignale versions is greater than the buyer gets with the aforementioned services. Which, of course, means that the buyer should really like the brand and the particular model. On the other hand, he still gets an exclusive model that is not only different but also prestigious. However, the feeling in such a car is much more expensive for many people than a few extra thousand euros.

evaluation

  • Vignale is for customers who love Ford models but want something more. They also have to consider the fact that the models are much more expensive, but they get some exclusivity and a certain service, which is not in the regular models.
