Short test: Renault Scenic Xmod dCi 110 Energy Expression

Renault and Scenic remain in their class of small family minivans, of course, but after a facelift, it also offers an Xmod version, and with it, a certain compromise for fans of light SUVs. According to Renault, the Scenic Xmod combines some of the traits of a crossover and a family minivan. The Xmod is more off the ground and has special aluminum wheels. Even stronger bumpers and plastic door sills have been added, of course to protect the vehicle when driving on uneven and unpaved terrain.

Renault Scenic Xmod does not have all-wheel drive, as many immediately think, but only two, and is the first Renault to be additionally equipped with an Extended Grip system. This traction control system allows the vehicle or driver to handle the road more easily even in more challenging driving conditions such as snow, mud, sand, etc. The system is controlled by a large rotary knob mounted on the center console and the driver can choose between three modes work. In expert mode, Extended Grip controls the braking system, giving the driver full control of engine torque. Road mode keeps the traction control system working properly and automatically engages over and over again at speeds in excess of 40 kilometers per hour. Loose Ground / Sol Meuble optimizes braking and engine torque to match the available wheel grip and is of course welcomed when driving on soft or dirt terrain.

Otherwise, everything is like a regular Scenic. Thus, a spacious passenger compartment that pampers both driver and passengers, and a 555-liter trunk, make the Scenic one of the best in its class. The Scenic also got the R-Link multimedia device with an update that bothered Scenic a lot at times. And what not, when laptops and desktops "freeze" ... So sometimes it hung when loading navigation maps immediately after launch, and the inscription "wait" spun not only for minutes, but also for hours. Of course, as with all electrical devices that are reset by disconnecting them from the mains, restarting the engine helped the Scenic or R-Link test system.

The test Scenic Xmod was equipped with a 1,5-liter turbodiesel engine with 110 horsepower. Since the machine is not the lightest (1.385 kg), especially when loaded to the maximum allowable limit (1.985 kg), the engine can sometimes, especially when driving on the track, which is really breathtaking. But since it's not even designed for that, it shows other virtues in other places, like fuel consumption. With a moderate weight of the driver's leg, the test Scenic Xmode consumed less than seven liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers, and even less than five liters when driving economically and carefully. And that's probably the most important piece of information for a buyer who's flirting with the Scenic Xmode and the base diesel engine.

evaluation

  • The Renault Scenic Xmod is a very softly designed crossover that impresses more with its spaciousness than actual off-road performance. But for the latter, it is absolutely not intended, because without all-wheel drive it is really unreasonable to go on dirt roads. But to overcome the rubble by the weekend is definitely not difficult.
