Lancia Ypsilon 1.4 16V Silver Glory

About three decades ago, we learned in Auto magazine: tell me what you drive and I will tell you who you are. No wonder: a man surrounds himself with what determines his character. As for cars: for some more, for some less. Upsilon is undoubtedly one of those who especially define the owner.

Technically, the Lancia Ypsilon is a Punto in disguise and belongs to the most popular car class in Slovenia. That's why - technically again - his competitors are exactly the same as Punt's. Hardly ever. By no means.

There are as many reasons why someone buys a car as there are buyers. Simply put: if you have money for a lower class car and you like Punto, you buy Punto. With Upsilon it's different: money (in principle) is not that much of an obstacle; you are looking for a car that will "define" you. All other qualities are behind him.

Looking at it this way, Ypsilon doesn't have many competitors, if any. His appearance exudes aristocratic elegance and a few teaspoons of sportiness. If you have Upsilon, you are probably female, but not necessarily. And you're fine if you don't. But you almost certainly have everything around neat and tidy. Even myself.

So you will definitely appreciate the soft material on the seats (if you haven't paid extra for Alcantara or leather yet) that won't irritate your skin when you're a little underdone in the summer. The interior is painted on your skin: the furniture is fully consistent with the exterior, with the same design features and mostly made of good materials. Only this little black cheap plastic (doors, between the seats) can get on your nerves. Because of the image.

You can also have a slightly more dynamic spirit in you if you choose such (the most powerful in Ypsilon) engine. Its features flirt with sportiness: "lower" (at lower revs, from idle to about 2500 rpm) is not entirely convincing, but from there it responds perfectly and, fortunately, even in fourth gear spins up to 6500 rpm in a matter of minutes, which translated into speed means about 170 kilometers per hour.

The next, fifth (that is, the last) gear is more economical than the sports one: in good conditions, the engine spins up only to 5500 rpm, which means that the car accelerates a little more, otherwise it is more intended for economical driving. Even less than 7 liters per 100 kilometers can be consumed, but on the other hand, if you are impatient, the consumption can also increase by more than 10 liters per 100 kilometers. It all depends on how you hold the accelerator pedal and how you control the transmission.

This is one of the best cars of this concern. Find out that this is not the same as in Punat after you have to lift the ring on the handle to reverse; shifting to reverse with this gearbox is always flawless and the gearbox also works quickly when moving forward. If, of course, you know how to handle it: with a pleasant sensation in the wrist joint.

The shape, engine and drivetrain can in principle convince you. But since this is a Lancia and is noticeably more expensive than the technically identical Punto, it should be better in every detail. Oh no. Automatic air conditioning means that on warm days it is uncomfortable for the passenger to blow in the head, the box in front of the passenger does not have a lock and interior lighting and does not cool down, three places for cans cannot accommodate a half-liter bottle, there are no rear pockets on the back, the interior lighting (three lamps in front) seems imperfect, and there are fewer and fewer boxes or storage space for generations in these luxurious little Lancia.

But you can live in Upsilon even with such resentment, and it's nice. Few cars can inspire so much confidence in the driver. But the drivers. The beauty of this kid is that driving with one sight of Upsilon you warn those around you: it's me. Whether they know you or not.

evaluation

  • Upsilon is right when you choose not the length and roominess of the car, but its appearance. He is the only one in this size class. For a sporty feel, it is worth taking a car with a 1,4-liter engine.
