Mercedes-Benz Viano 2.2 CDI (110 kW) Trend

The fact is that Vito - the first to enter the market - set completely new standards at the very beginning, "a long time ago", in 1995. He never wanted it and didn't belong to a company where, for example, Fiat Ducato, Citröen Jumper, Peugeot Boxer or Renault Master are screaming. In terms of size and appearance, he preferred to be among the largest limousine vans and simpler "businessmen". And this is exactly what tempted many.

Many, even the most ordinary family fathers, began to encroach on him, although rumors of quality problems that he had at the beginning never completely subsided. It impressed with its interesting and right-angled shape, convenient dimensions - by the way, its length was "only" 466 centimeters, which is significantly less than the current E class, and only 14 centimeters more than the C class, which meant that it was quite decently. found even in austere urban centers and around giant malls.

The new Vito is very different in this respect. It has grown by about 9 centimeters in length, its wheelbase is also 20 centimeters longer, and, finally, the drive has been moved from the front to the rear wheels. This, of course, means that in the city center and in tight parking spaces, its maneuverability is slightly more limited than that of its predecessor, but as a result, its interior is slightly more spacious. And there is another way to stop at this chapter.

Vito and Viano are not a car that would differ only in their names. The differences that put the Viana slightly above the Vita are already visible on the outside, and no doubt you can't miss them on the inside. The plastic on the dashboard is better (read softer), the sensors are the same as in sedans, although the coolant temperature sensor is not found among them.

Instead, you'll find a digital outdoor temperature display and a current speed display. Yes, you read that right, Viano does not have an on-board computer in Trend equipment, but it does have two speed reading options. And as silly as it sounds, you'll soon discover that the idea isn't silly at all.

The metal plates also warn that you are entering the Viana and not the Vita, well, say, Mercedes-Benz plates attached to the sill, underbody covered with decent fabric, plastic walls and a beautifully designed car ceiling. The seats should never be overlooked.

The front, dedicated to the driver and front passenger, of course offers the most in terms of the number of adjustments, as the seat height can also be determined, so they keep up with the seat and seat in terms of their comfort. there are no benches in the third row. And if you add to that the convenience of getting in and out of the car, then it is undoubtedly true that those sitting in the back of the Viano are much more comfortable to drive than on many sedans.

However, this will not be entirely the case if you plan on buying a Viana instead of a limousine van. At least for a Viana like the test one, no. The seating arrangement inside this time was divided on a two / two / three system, that is, two seats in the front, two in the middle and a bench in the back. For additional comfort, there was also a longitudinally movable and folding table that served as an armrest when we did not need it. And I must admit, we really can't blame the comfort for anything ... Until you need a different design of the space.

For example, the front seats do not swivel, as do the seats in the second row. The latter can be twisted only if you separate them from below and do it yourself. But be careful - the work is not at all easy, as each weighs more than 40 kilograms. The situation is even worse with the rear seat, which is even heavier and, unlike the seats, cannot even be moved longitudinally. So in certain situations, its tipping and divisibility in a ratio of 1/3: 2/3 can save you, but it should not be overlooked that Viano is made on the basis of a camper, so it is also appropriate to divide and assemble a third of the bench. And why do we describe all this to you in such detail?

Because there is not much luggage space in the Viano. Maybe for the suitcases of passengers who will ride in it, and nothing more. Even the usable space in the middle, which can extend from the tailgate to the dashboard, you won't be able to use unless you remove the back bench ... and learn more as you get to know the interior about Vian; that the folding table can only be used when the seats in the second row are facing the rear of the vehicle. Well, this is without a doubt another and, above all, sufficient proof that Viano, at least in the form in which it was tested, is more suitable for the needs of hotels, airports or companies than for family needs. ...

You will not find much artistic freedom in the arrangement and use of the interior space in it, but you will have everything you need to transport passengers. The driver, as well as all other passengers, sit well. The audio system is solid (not great), ventilation and cooling are two-stage, which means that the temperature can be set separately for the front and rear of the car, you will not miss reading and all the other interior lights, because there is enough, this applies to drawers and holders for cans.

The hotel driver will quickly get used to the fact that the sliding door is single and the safety catch holds it more securely, but also that the tailgate is difficult to close and passengers will have to listen for a lot of noise. engine inside.

Interestingly, he also drives a midsize E-Class sedan, but doesn't make as much noise. However, it must be admitted that the work in the Viano is extremely active, also due to the six-speed manual transmission that it achieves a very decent final speed and is not too greedy when consumed.

You will only know that the new Viana is powered by a pair of rear wheels when the ground under the wheels is really slippery. Then he wants to play with your ass, not with your nose, but without fear. All of the built-in safety, including the powerful ESP system, simply won't let him do it.

But something remains true: Despite the three-pointed star on the nose, Viano cannot hide that it is based on a cargo van. Even though in a "business" suit, he wants to get as close to the limousine vans as possible.

At first I liked the Viano because it was harmoniously designed, with beautiful, calm lines, and the first contact with the interior when I got behind the wheel of the truck was disappointing. The seats are hard and uncomfortable, plastic will fit into one of the Korean cars earlier than into a Mercedes. I don't waste words on creation. It's just that there is too much air in the plastic joints, in the seat rails. I can’t even imagine how a woman can move the seat, because this maneuver requires a lot of strength in her hands and great ingenuity. The next breakdown is the volume of the otherwise good engine, additional soundproofing would not hurt. He also disappointed the feel on the brake pedal; the electronics do do their job (the idea is to help the driver), but the driver doesn't get the right feedback, so he never knows exactly how much more he needs to press the brake pedal. At a high price, I would have expected much more from such a machine. This star on the nose is more suitable for decoration.

Alyosha Mrak

I always like to sit in a limousine minibus, although this one already borders on a van. I would take off the rear seats (yes, hard work!), Easily fit tires, tent, tools in them and sing a trailer with a race car in the back. But while this is a great engine for a three-pointed star on the nose, I would still prefer to look at the competition. Price and poor build quality are incompatible.

Overall rating (323/420)

  • The Viano, as tested, is not a limousine van for families, but, above all, a comfortable "minibus" designed for airports, hotels or companies. And that will work great too.

  • Exterior (13/15)

The novelty is indeed rounder and therefore more elegant, but not everyone likes the new Viana shape.

  • Interior (108/140)

The entrance and seating deserve very high marks, but not the flexibility of the space.

  • Engine, transmission (37

    / 40)

The most powerful diesel engine and six-speed manual transmission are arguably the best choices in the range.

  • Driving performance (70

    / 95)

There is nothing wrong with the drive being moved to the rear wheels after a new one. ENP fully copes with the task.

  • Performance (30/35)

The equipment is already almost sporty, but, unfortunately, this also applies to the noise inside.

  • Security (31/45)

Electronic aids are, in principle, sufficient for a safe ride. Otherwise, the safety is guaranteed by a three-pointed star.

  • Economy

Simbio package, decent low fuel consumption and not a very good selling price.
