Mercedes-Benz V 220 Cdi

Viano or Vito, what's the difference? We thought about it when we got our hands on a minivan that looked like the well-known MB Vita. So is it a van or a passenger car - a minivan? Suppose, at the first meeting, there was a little confusion. Both models, very similar in appearance, almost twins, differ mainly in the interior and partly in the chassis design.

You will also notice the difference when you purchase a license. Vit says combined car, Viano says personal car! Thus, the state separates these two similar machines well. The Vita is also available in a cargo version, i.e. without seats behind the driver, or in a passenger version with only one row of seats and a closed back made of sheet metal, and of course in the passenger version. However, Viano is for passengers only. And this is for those who require great comfort.

In the salon, we were told that this is a luxury minivan for transporting business people. A sort of "shuttle", as the British would call it! Its interior fittings are of a very high standard. The upholstery, plastics and wallpaper are said to be significantly better than Vit. All for more comfort and luxury!

They shouldn't be offended, right? We have no comments on comfort because all seven seats are really comfortable for both shorter and longer distances, but we don't know anything about significantly better materials.

First of all, the hard plastic on the parts and seats is disappointing. If before there were complaints about the poor quality of production of Vito models, it is difficult to say that something has changed for the better in Viano.

The Viano 220 Cdi test showed quite a few signs of (premature) wear at 25.500 km. Probably, no one before us worked with him in "gloves", but this is not an excuse. Scuffs on plastic, wallpaper, and even fragments of plastic seats are not an example even for such a respected brand as Mercedes-Benz. Fortunately, there were no "crickets" or any unpleasant rattling while driving. In this regard, the Viano is nothing short of a van. After all, when you drive this car, you probably won't notice much of the resentment we mentioned above. Except for a failed cassette player that just stabs you in the eye. The cassette storage box was jammed and could have been replaced long ago with something more modern, such as a CD changer.

Otherwise, if we continue to move. We have no comments. The 220 Cdi engine is amazing. Even with a fairly acceptable consumption of diesel fuel. In our test, we measured the average consumption of 9 liters per 4 cars.

kilometers (a combination of city driving and highway), and on a longer trip abroad, it dropped to just over 8 liters.

While the Viano is also a big car for the size of an SUV, it's a real pleasure to drive. There are few such peppy cars in this segment. A well-ratio gearbox and a short, sporty shifter in the center of the dash next to the steering wheel also help the engine a lot. The engine and transmission are what will first remain in the memory of the driver.

But is the ride quality, and therefore the chassis and brakes, adequate for the jump motor?

We can answer in the affirmative without worry. The road position is reliable and allows you to drive confidently even in bends. Thanks to the front-wheel drive, there are no problems with rear removal, even when refilling gas on a wet surface. The driving feel is good, the seats are high, which contributes to good visibility in motion. However, the feel also fades a little, so the adjustable steering wheel is quite flat in the hands, which requires an upright backrest. On the other hand, the rear axle with a comfortable suspension does not look like a van at all. Rear seat passengers praised the comfort. No hard kicks when driving over bumps, and plenty of legroom for basketball team members.

The Viana's spaciousness is certainly its big advantage over the competition. The seats can be individually adjusted to suit current needs and can be rotated so that the passengers behind the driver and front passenger look back and talk to the other two in the back row without straining their necks. In addition, good interior lighting, folding seats (you can assemble a table), armrests, small compartments and boxes for small items should be praised. The Viano is well equipped in this respect, but it could be even better. During the rearrangement of the seats, we again encountered a substandard finish, as a member of the test team crashed into a sharp edge until bloody. And this during the mission, which should be one of the easiest in this car! Moving the seats requires a skilled hand, preferably a man's. To remove the seat from the bracket, you will have to pull quite hard on the handle.

The Viano can be a very versatile vehicle for families who need more space, perhaps for people who like to squeeze sports accessories into their car (bicycles, paragliding, scooter ...), or for long business trips abroad when you drive it more. passengers, or you have to carry a lot of luggage with you, where a quick and comfortable trip outweighs a lot.

Viana can do it all for sure.

Overall rating (287/420)

  • Interesting car. Versatile, suitable for carrying a large number of demanding passengers. But it can be a great family car, if the budget can digest a good seven million tolar. It also raises the question of whether we can overlook the inaccuracy of the interior workmanship and the hard plastic at the price. Otherwise, it impresses with a powerful and not too gluttonous engine.

  • Exterior (12/15)

From the outside, Viano looks elegant and recognizable. Silver metallic suits him.

  • Interior (103/140)

There is nothing to complain about the spaciousness and comfort of the seats. However, one could find quite a few comments given the hard plastic and precision workmanship inside.

  • Engine, transmission (32

    / 40)

Great motto, good upgrades and excellent transmission.

  • Driving performance (58

    / 95)

For an even more comfortable seating position with the engine, we would have liked a more adjustable steering wheel, but otherwise we were impressed with the ride quality.

  • Performance (25/35)

In the Viano, the ride is also fast thanks to the jump drive and a reasonably high final speed.

  • Security (26/45)

There are quite a few built-in security features in Viano, but since they are built in such a respected home, we would have liked something more.

  • Economy

Fuel consumption is acceptable, the base price is slightly less high.
