Can Am Spyder RT Freedom S

To be honest from the outset, this is not one of the five cars you need in your garage. Even if you bring it to ten, it will probably fall out. Why? Firstly, because it does not tilt, and secondly, because it is too wide to be used with a motorcycle. I usually park test cars with a wheel, i.e. motorcycles and scooters, in front of the office, but I had to drive to the garage because it is too wide to pass an inch thick rack.

On the other hand, I heard about a wealthy student who has an all-wheel drive car with an S on the tailgate, which, after a one-day Spyder test (otherwise an RS version, not an RT, but that doesn't matter) is pure bang. A? I think and assume that he doesn't like this two-wheeled motorcycle because he considers it dangerous, because he can tip over, because he has to step on the ground in front of traffic lights, because. ... Yes, a motorcycle can have many repulsive properties in the eyes of a motorist. Everyone has their own right.

Is Spyder Safe? It does not have airbags and a roll cage, but it is equipped with a VSS (Vehicle Stability System) system, which includes Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control System (TCS) and SCS. stabilization system. I didn't believe it myself before, but the Spyder is really impossible to flip. Well, there is probably a way (I hope it flips if you turn the steering wheel to the extreme at 150 per hour), but doing seemingly unhealthy methods I was unable to raise the front inner wheel more than pedal ...

The electronics are just smarter and don't allow you to ride on two wheels and slip on the last, which is actually a shame. At least one button will make you think that you can (maybe only up to 60 km / h) afford a drifting turn. ... But I just imagine that then I won't be able to go straight at all. At full throttle, the rear wheel spins at idle, but only if the steering wheel is leveled, otherwise the electronics take the throttle and, if necessary, brake one of the wheels to keep the Spider firmly on the ground. Yes, the Spyder is safe, but this electronic safety gets in the way of steering wheel dominance too much.

Is Spyder user friendly? Just look at a double seat like the one found on the most comfortable touring bike, the Honda Gold Wing. It does its job well, especially for the passenger. Like the driver, it can also turn on the heated lever or turn up the music volume. Then there is the bulky, electronically adjustable wind protection system that reliably protects against wind and insects in the top position. In fact, the whole body is well protected, with only slight swelling over the ankles. Interestingly, however, this mass creates such a vortex of air that the driver is slightly pushed forward by the wind at high speeds.

True, this was confirmed by raindrops that hit the dashboard at the back on the highway at a speed of 130 kilometers per hour. Another comment from the back seat: the exhaust on the right heats up the leg. The suspension is adjustable so you can choose how hard you want to transfer bumps from the road to the rear while driving, but in the comfort section it needs to be mentioned that the Spyder picks up three tracks on the road. Why is it important? Think about it - a motorcycle takes one, a car takes two, a tricycle takes three, and the chance of avoiding a pothole is three times less than that of a motorcycle.

Is Spyder fun? If you're a car enthusiast who's tempted by the wind in your hair (well, around your helmet) and you're terrified of a motorcycle, then riding a sheet metal seat with no sheet metal around your body is going to be fun, but what if this American doesn't lean into a turn. On a motorcycle, centrifugal force is offset by lean, so that force pushes us into the seat, while the Spyder stays upright when cornering, so the rider wants to pull in a radial direction, and the force has to overcome their body muscles. arms and legs. Therefore (fast) driving on a winding road is not very exciting, it is even tiring. Although this animal, put on wide tires, can be quite fast in the corner.

The power is enough for a top speed of 170 kilometers per hour (on the track it is surprisingly stable and calm!), And it is very pleasant to set the cruise control at about 140 km / h and follow the surprised expressions on the faces of road users. However, cruise control has such a disadvantage as a rude interruption, which the driver can, in a pinch, feel like a passenger's helmet hitting him. The sound is harsh as it has the same Rotax engine as the Aprilia RSV 1000 and I wonder how well they smoothed it out compared to the sportier Spyder RS. We recommend choosing only a robotic gearbox, as such a luxurious ship fits better than a classic (motorcycle) pedal.

Yes, the Spyder is fun, but not compared to a motorcycle.

Is the spider cheap? Wow, that's really not it. A roofless Mazda MX5 with a 1-liter engine costs 8 € 19.790, a comfortable BMW R1200RT 16.750 € 3 and a three-wheeled Piaggio MP400 6.654 € 9 13. It is true, however, that the Spyder RT combines the features of all three of these vehicles to some extent, so it will only appeal to a small group of gentlemen who are not overly concerned about the economic crisis. They probably won't even think that the consumption of XNUMX to XNUMX liters of unleaded gasoline will be too high and they won't even have to take a motorcycle exam since the tricycle is Category B.
