Test drive Nissan Juke vs Mitsubishi ASX

These crossovers used to be very popular, but devaluation spoiled everything. They stopped selling Juke and ASX, and now, three years later, importers have decided to return them to Russia. Only the balance of power in the market is already different

Once Nissan Juke and Mitsubishi ASX easily sold in circulation of more than 20 thousand units per year, but that was back in 2013. Later, due to the fall of the ruble, the cars left the Russian market altogether. As soon as the market situation stabilized, the supply of crossovers resumed. But will they be able to compete with numerous innovations? Even more stylish, technically advanced and dynamic.

You don't need a spider or a microscope to see what a spider looks like under a microscope - just look at the Nissan Juke. You can love or hate his design, but in any case, it will be strong emotions. You can joke about it, but it's hard to deny the obvious - this strange car brought success to the Japanese manufacturer and actually made subcompact SUVs very popular. The Juke still looks very fresh and original, despite the fact that it was first shown in 2010, and during this time it has undergone only one small restyling.

Nissan is back with a new look: now, for expensive trim levels, you can order Perso styling - with contrasting details in black, white, red or yellow. Disks in this case will be multi-colored, 18-inch.

Mitsubishi ASX is the same age as Nissan Juke, and all these years it was constantly being completed: changing the settings of the suspension, variator, improving noise insulation. He was also touched by the feverish search for a new style: in just two years, while the crossover was absent from the Russian market, its appearance was corrected twice. The trapezoidal grille was replaced by the X-Face, but the restyling was done with little blood, so the X is not very effective.

In general, the front end turned out to be elegant, although overloaded with details. If the Juke looks like a spider, then the ASX also has something from an insect, only it is not clear from which. The rear bumper was better for the designers, but the most noticeable details are the brackets of the reflectors, which should remind of the coupe-like Eclipse Cross, the most unusual and striking Mitsubishi.

If the external design of "Juka" resists aging, then the internal one is not very successful: cheap plastic, echoing panels, large gaps. Glossy color details, a leather-stitched visor, a toy climate block, door handle openers - without all of this, the inside of the Juke would look quite budgetary. Another "chip" of the crossover is the buttons on the center console, which, depending on the selected mode, can change the climatic or driving settings.

The inside of the ASX didn't change as much as it did outside. The front panel looks modest, but its upper part is completely soft. The last restyling affected the central tunnel: now its sides are soft, between them there is a tray with an aluminum texture. The variator lever grows out of a rectangular panel - it used to be round.

The center console is a thing of the past: multimedia with an inconvenient menu and no navigation, which cannot be compared with the Nissan system, a primitive climate control unit. If the Juke dashboard takes originality, then the ASX - the classic graphics of the dials.

The Juke's sporty landing is low and cramped, but the lack of a steering wheel adjustment makes it very comfortable. For 2018, this is a serious ergonomic miscalculation.

The large, beautiful ASX paddles hint at Mitsubishi's sporty past, but the driver sits high and upright here. This does not give particular advantages in visibility, besides, the Nissan has better mirrors. The ASX allows you to tune the steering wheel for reach, but tall people in both Nissan and Mitsubishi will complain about insufficient adjustment ranges.

The Juke's rear doors are invisible thanks to the hidden handles in the pillars (Alfa Romeo, we recognize you). The fact that four of us can be accommodated here is more likely to cause a pleasant surprise. The ASX is more spacious in the second row: there is a higher ceiling and more headroom in front of the knees, but the doors open at a small angle. Official measurements draw roughly the same trunk volume for Nissan and Mitsubishi, but even without measurements, it is clear that the ASX has a deeper, wider and more comfortable trunk.

The Juke not only looked original, but was also originally designed, which was the cost of an advanced four-wheel drive with a separate clutch for each wheel. Now there is no all-wheel drive, no turbo engines, no charged versions, or even "mechanics". Only the simplest aspirated 1,6 liter with no alternative variator. Such versions have always been the basis of demand: buyers were primarily attracted by the Juke's appearance, and not by how it drives.

ASX with an engine of the same size is available only with "mechanics", and the variator is offered in tandem with a two-liter engine and all-wheel drive. Due to the greater power, Mitsubishi gives the impression of a more dynamic car, especially since it is possible to control the transmission manually using the petals.

The intricate Dzhuka variator feels worse and has less engine headroom. Nevertheless, the claimed acceleration to "hundreds" for Nissan is 11,5 s, and for the ASX - 11,7 s. In any case, the dynamics of CVT machines can hardly be called exciting.

The Juke handles sharper and more recklessly than the ASX, but the 18-inch wheels made the suspension intolerant of pits - it's too urban. Mitsubishi does not like sharp joints and speed bumps, but it feels great on a country lane. In addition, it has more ground clearance, and the all-wheel drive transmission is equipped with a Lock mode, which distributes traction between the axles equally. For its segment, the ASX has decent cross-country ability, although its CVT does not like long slips.

Juke and ASX start from about the same mark: for the first they ask for $ 14, for the other - $ 329.From the point of view of Nissan options, it is more profitable: the price tag for a Mitsubishi with a CVT starts where the Juke has already ended - $ 14. for the simplest package.

The main difficulty for the returned Juke and ASX is not the fluctuation of the ruble exchange rate, but the competitors of the Russian assembly. Crossovers-foreign cars are an opportunity to stand out from the set of "Cret" and "Capture", but if the Juke takes on design, then for Mitsubishi the situation is more complicated. You will not stand out due to one Japanese assembly, and the set of options is limited due to the pricing policy.
