Malfunctions and replacement of the front brake pads VAZ 2107
The braking system of the car must always be in good technical condition and, first of all, it concerns the brake pads. On the VAZ "seven" they have to be changed rarely, and the main reason for this is the wear of the friction lining. The appearance of problems with the braking mechanisms is indicated by the corresponding signs, which indicate the need for inspection and repair or replacement of the brake elements.
Brake pads VAZ 2107
The basis of the safety of any car is the braking system, in which the brake pads are the main component. We will dwell on the purpose of the pads, their types, malfunctions and replacement in the VAZ "seven" in more detail.
What are they for
Today, almost all cars use the same braking systems based on the friction force. The basis of this system is special friction mechanisms located on each wheel. The rubbing elements in them are brake pads and brake discs or drums. Stopping the car is carried out under the influence of the pads on the drum or disc by means of a hydraulic drive.
What are the
On "Zhiguli" of the seventh model, the brake pads have a structural difference, since there are disc brakes in front and drum brakes in the back.
Front
The front end brakes are fitted with pads with catalog numbers 2101-3501090. The detail has dimensions:
- length 83,9 mm;
- height - 60,5 mm;
- thickness - 15,5 mm.
The front brake elements are installed the same on all classic Zhiguli. The manufacturer and supplier of original front pads for the VAZ conveyor is TIIR OJSC.
The design of the front brake mechanism is quite simple and consists of the following elements:
- brake disk;
- caliper;
- two working cylinders;
- two pads.
The condition of the pads must be periodically monitored so that the thickness of the linings is at least 2 mm. If the friction material is thinner, the pads need to be replaced.
Rear
For drum brakes, pads are used with the article number 2101-3502090 and the following dimensions:
- diameter - 250 mm;
- width - 51 mm.
The original product is produced by JSC AvtoVAZ. As in the case of the front, the rear pads fit any classic Zhiguli model.
The rear axle braking mechanism has a simple drum design that works to expand. It consists of the following elements:
- drum;
- service brake cylinder;
- pads;
- parking brake lever.
Which is better
When choosing braking elements, you should not save money. In addition, it should be borne in mind that the design of the "seven" brake mechanism does not have any modern systems that increase the level of safety. Therefore, the products in question should be bought in accordance with the following indicators:
- the optimal coefficient of friction according to GOST is 0,35–0,45;
- minimal impact on brake disc wear;
- large resource of overlays;
- absence of extraneous sounds during braking.
If we consider the manufacturers of brake pads, then for active driving, preference should be given to ATE, Ferodo. For a more relaxed driving style, when overheating and high loads on the braking system are not expected, you can purchase Allied Nippon, Finwhale, TIIR. When purchasing a brake element, attention should be paid to the composition of which the friction lining is made. If the pad is made using large metal chips, which is noticeable by the characteristic inclusions, the brake disc will wear out much faster, while characteristic depressions will remain on it.
The best option would be those pads that are made from high-tech compounds that exclude the rapid wear of the brake disc.
Brake pad problems
The considered parts of the braking system have to be changed not only when they are worn out, but also in the event of malfunctions that are associated with the use of low-quality consumables or too active driving. The appearance of problems with the pads is indicated by characteristic signs:
- creak, grinding and other extraneous sounds when braking;
- skidding of the car when you press the brake pedal;
- to act on the pedal, you have to make more or less effort than usual;
- beating on the pedal at the time of braking;
- after releasing the pedal, it does not return to its original position;
- the presence of black dust on the rims.
Extraneous sounds
Modern brake pads are equipped with special indicators that indicate the wear of these auto parts. The indicator is a metal strip that is fixed below the friction lining. When most of the material is used up, but the pad is still able to decelerate, a characteristic rattle or whistle appears when the brake pedal is applied. If the pads are not equipped with such indicators, the presence of extraneous sounds indicates obvious wear of the elements in the brake mechanism and the need to replace them.
Drift
If the car skids to one side when braking, then the likely cause is wear on one of the pads. The car can be skidded right up to turning, and even on a dry surface. In addition to the pads, skidding can occur due to the appearance of scoring or deformation of the brake discs.

Increasing or decreasing pedal effort
If you have to press the pedal unusually hard or lightly, then the problem may be caused by abrasion or contamination of the pads. If everything is in order with them, then the integrity of the entire brake system should be checked for fluid leakage.
Vibration
If there is vibration when the brake pedal is pressed, then a possible cause is the ingress of dirt between the brake disc and the pads, or a crack or chips have appeared on the latter. As a result, parts are subject to premature wear. However, you should be aware that a similar phenomenon is also possible in case of malfunctions of the hub or hydraulic cylinders of the brake system.
The pedal sinks
Sometimes it happens that the brake pedal does not move back after pressing. This indicates that the pads are stuck to the disc. This phenomenon can be observed at sub-zero temperatures, when moisture has got on the pads. In addition, it is possible for air to enter the braking system, which requires inspection and subsequent repair or bleeding of the brakes.
Plaque on discs
The deposits on the rims are black dust, which indicates that the pads are worn out. If the dust has metal particles, then not only the pads are erased, but also the brake disc itself. If such a situation arises, it is not worth tightening with the inspection of the brake mechanism, as well as with the replacement of failed parts.
Replacing the front pads on the VAZ 2107
If factory brake pads are installed on the front end of your "seven", then you won't have to worry about replacing them soon. Such elements are nursed for at least 50 thousand km. during normal vehicle operation, i.e. without constant hard braking. If the pads are worn out, then they can be replaced independently without visiting a service station. To carry out repair work, you will need the following tools:
- Phillips and flat screwdrivers;
- pliers;
- a hammer.
Dismantling
We remove the pads in the following order:
- We raise the front of the car with a jack, unscrew the wheel mount and remove it.To remove the wheel, unscrew the four mounting bolts
- Using a screwdriver or pliers, remove the two cotter pins holding the rods of the brake elements.The rods are held by cotter pins, we take them out
- Having pointed a Phillips screwdriver, we push out the rods of the pads. If they are difficult to come out, you can use a penetrating lubricant and lightly tap the screwdriver with a hammer.Fingers are pushed out with a Phillips screwdriver
- We take out the clamps of the pads.Removing the clamps from the pads
- Brake elements often come out of the seats without problems. If difficulties arise, pry them through the holes with a screwdriver, resting on the brake cylinder.The block comes out of the seat by hand. If this is not the case, pry it with a screwdriver
- Remove the pads from the caliper.Remove the pads from the caliper by hand
Installation
We install new pads in the following order:
- We examine the anthers of the working hydraulic cylinders. If the rubber element is damaged, replace it with a new one.Before assembling the mechanism, inspect the anther for damage
- We measure the thickness of the brake disc with a caliper. For accuracy, we do this in several places. The disc must be at least 9 mm thick. If it is not, the part needs to be replaced.Using a vernier caliper, check the thickness of the brake disc
- Open the hood and unscrew the cap of the brake fluid reservoir.From the expansion tank of the brake system, unscrew the cap
- Drain part of the brake fluid with a rubber bulb so that its level is below the maximum mark. We do this so that when the pistons are pressed into the cylinders, the liquid does not flow out of the tank.
- Through the metal spacer, we alternately rest the mount against the pistons of the cylinders and press them all the way. If this is not done, then it will not be possible to supply new parts due to the small distance between the brake disc and the piston.In order for the new pads to fit into place without problems, we press the pistons of the cylinders with a mounting spatula
- We mount the pads and other parts in the reverse order.
