Nissan Terrano Universal 3.0 Di Turbo Sport

The XNUMX-liter turbodiesel with direct injection of gas oil into the combustion chambers is already a well-known and proven product. In particular, Nissan transferred it to Terran from an even more compact and prestigious SUV - Patrol GR. And just like on Patrol, he does a good job here.

When the variable vane turbine wakes up above 1500 rpm, the machine starts to pull continuously and very convincingly up to 4300 rpm, where, as is usual for diesel engines, its breathing completely subsides. Vibrations up to 1500 rpm on the road are not really that bothersome, so the picture changes in the field where engine response, torque and power are very important, starting from idle. Of course

Nissan hasn't lost sight of the inconvenience and has provided an all-terrain transmission that effectively eliminates nausea. Thanks to the excellent (plug-in) all-wheel drive, the Terrano feels equally good on and off the road. The attachable four-wheel drive capabilities, which can be further enhanced by the transmission for even more efficient mowing, are also capable of tackling more challenging terrain, but we recommend using our off-road tires for carefree off-road walking. locality. However, choosing the wrong tires, which can perform very well on paved roads (see Technical Data), can quickly completely ruin the all-wheel drive performance in muddy terrain.

Also annoying is the thumping of the engine below 1300 rpm, which you pass quickly enough when accelerating in first and second gear, and the other three gears take a lot more time and your nerves, so downshifting is (almost) necessary. Of course, when driving in a lower gear and staying in it for longer than necessary, oil consumption also increases. In the test, it was only an acceptable 12 liters per 5 kilometers, but we are convinced that if we exclude the "forced" driving in low gear, it will fall at least a hundred kilometers. Indeed, with a very careful driving outside the city (not on the highway!), We recorded a modest consumption of 100 liters of diesel fuel per 8 kilometers, which confirms the potential of the unit.

Having just mentioned the gearbox, let's just say that the driver's right hand should pay more attention to the precise and relatively long movements of the gear lever.

Preheating before starting the engine is also not quite up to date with modern turbodiesels. Thus, during a cold start it is always necessary to wait for the preheat indicator lamp to go out, which takes 20 long seconds, even with an outside temperature of about 4 degrees Celsius. You must also wait for the light to go out, at least for a moment, at each subsequent start (already at the operating temperature of a warm engine), otherwise the engine will take unreasonably longer to start.

Driving Terran is uncomfortable due to the stiff suspension and at times (large lateral irregularities and bumps) even shaking. When you load six (!!) passengers with luggage into the car, in addition to the driver, the (un) comfort is improved and the transmission of vibration to the buttocks of the passengers is reduced. The tilt is unobtrusively small due to the vehicle's height, namely the sturdy chassis.

With the Terran update, Nissan has taken the safety precaution into account, as the braking force between the front and rear wheels is now electronically controlled, and the first in its class also offers front side airbags (integrated in the front seat backrests) and active head restraints.

We can also see some design changes in the middle of the dashboard, gauges and door trims, but these are of secondary importance compared to all the other improvements and updates already mentioned. Likewise, minor fixes to some external elements (radiator grille) are less important. On the inside, let's just mention the comfortable enough seats that will get the five (5) front passengers to their destination without undue appeals, while the last two passengers, who sit more on the bench than in the bench seat, will feel every mile. separately. The seat height of the bench in the third row is very low, and there is enough legroom just for children's shoes. On top of that, the Nissans completely forgot about the airbags, but they remembered at least the three-point automatic seat belts that hold both halves of the seat.

The cash investment of 6.790.000 tolars in the base model Terrano 3.0 Di Turbo Sport represents the most profitable investment within its nearest competitor (Frontera, Discovery). When we add excellent off-road capabilities, advanced engine design that otherwise has some room for improvement, and improved safety equipment to a bargain price, the combination is certainly a win-win. So, if you're an avid adventurer looking to discover new (more or less accessible) places, the Nissan Terrano with the new XNUMX-litre engine is a good choice.

evaluation

  • The Nissan Terrano definitely won out with the three-liter engine. But, in all honesty, this unit still has some room for development, so Nissan engineers would have to roll up their sleeves and tweak little things like low-rev cultivation and displacement a bit. The all-wheel drive design continues to be top notch and the price is also the most competitive among the competition.
