Night vision - night vision

Innovative infrared technology developed by BMW to improve perception in the dark.

For example, the frame clearly follows the road (panning), and distant objects can be enlarged (scaled). BMW Night Vision is activated / deactivated using a button located next to the dimmer.

The thermal imaging camera covers an area of 300 meters in front of the vehicle.

The more intense the heat the camera registers, the clearer the image displayed on the center monitor becomes. Thus, people (for example, pedestrians on the side of the road) and animals are the brightest areas of the image and, of course, important points to focus on when driving safely.

Night vision is very useful, especially during long journeys on public roads, narrow streets, driveways in courtyards and dark underground garages, and greatly improves safety when driving at night.

After conducting a series of comparative studies, BMW engineers opted for the innovative FIR (FarInfraRed = Remote Infrared) technology as it is ideal for recognizing people, animals and objects at night. Scientific research confirms that FIR is more suitable than NearInfraRed (NIR = Near Infrared). BMW has taken advantage of the FIR principle and augmented the technology with automotive functions.
