A new French law requires car brands to run ads that encourage customers to walk or cycle.

Automakers announcing their new vehicles will have to offer more environmentally friendly modes of transport, including public transport. Messages must be formatted in an easily readable or audible manner and clearly distinguishable from an advertising message and any other mandatory reference.

Wherever automakers plan to announce their latest vehicles, they also need to push people in the other direction. Under a new law passed on Tuesday, the country will require automakers to encourage greener modes of transport and mobility. The regulation starts next March.

What should commercials for new cars show?

The alternatives companies must present include walking, cycling and public transport. In France, in particular, you'll see phrases like "For short trips, choose walking or cycling" or "Use public transport every day," according to CTV News. Any phrase used must be "easily recognizable and distinct" to viewers on any screen.

This also applies to film, radio and television advertising.

Digital advertising, television and film advertising are included in the new rules. For radio announcements, the stimulus should be the oral part immediately following the announcement. Each will also include a hashtag that translates from French as "Move without pollution."

France aims to be carbon neutral by 2040

France is one of the European countries pushing for a complete ban on the sale of new vehicles with internal combustion engines. Right now, the goal is to have a ban by 2040. Last year, the European Union also proposed a similar bloc-wide ban that aims to achieve that goal by 2035. In this decade, many countries are working to reduce emissions.
