Pruning shears - TOP 5 recommended pruning shears

Is your garden in need of maintenance and you don't have the right pruner yet? In principle, the choice is not difficult, given some important details about the instrument itself. In the article, you will also find out which scissors are interesting and how they differ from an anvil pruner.

Why choose a good pruner?

There are several reasons and they are not too complicated. Good garden tools will last longer not only for professionals, but also for lovers of houseplant care. They do some of the work for the user, if only because the best models are equipped with adjustable blade tension and gears that allow you to apply less force when cutting. They also allow you to work for long periods of time because they are lightweight and have ergonomic handles. Thus, they do not burden the user much.

A very good technique copes not only with dried and thin branches, but also with strong and solid elements of trees and shrubs. Combined with non-stick coated blades, they provide precise trimming of fresh stems without the worry of blade sticking. As you can see, a good pruning shear is not a whim of a homegrown green lover, it is useful for even the simplest maintenance activities, and its benefits are felt in proportion to the duration of the work.

What type of blade to choose for a pruner?

The dilemma of whether to choose a pruner with an anvil or scissors is only apparent. Why can you say that? This is because the use of different types of blades is (almost) completely different. Anvil specimens are equipped with a single blade that works until it touches the base. The branch rests against it, and the blade, approaching it, cuts the element.

In scissor models, there are two blades that do not touch each other, but pass like in scissors. This allows you to cut very accurately and close to the trunk. With an anvil pruner, it's impossible to get that close to the end of a branch. However, they have another major advantage - they are ideal for hardened, thick and old branches, which require much more strength in the case of scissor models.

Which is more effective, anvil pruners or scissors? For fresh branches and young stems with circulating sap, choose a scissor model. Ask for an anvil model to remove old and hard branches.

What length pruner is suitable for my garden?

It is difficult to find universal solutions. Caring for low-growing crops and vegetables, as well as young shrubs, requires the use of precision tools. Hand scissors with a handle no longer than 20/25 cm are suitable here. So they can be held in one hand and not tire when working with the tool. However, it does not work in large spaces, especially if the garden contains more than just beds and smaller shrubs.

In such cases, a longer two-handed pruner is a good solution. Garden shears are also suitable for trimming hedges or grass. This is a variant with a special focus on modeling dense bushes. For special tasks, i.e. trimming high branches, a scissor pruner in the form of a telescopic giraffe will certainly come in handy. You can, of course, use a ladder, but this will not always be a safe method. Earth gives much better stability.

TOP 5 recommended secateurs

Knife secateurs CELLFAST ERGO

The first choice is the extremely efficient and handy Cellfast secateurs. Equipped with an ergonomic handle that promotes proper grip of the tool. The hole adjustment allows the pruner to fit the user's hand size and the diameter of the stems to be cut. Of course, you can adjust it with your thumb, just like blocking the opening of a tool. This pruner is especially suitable for young stems and branches thanks to the non-stick coating of the blades.

Two-handed scissors CELLFAST IDEAL™

The telescopic model is specially prepared for cutting thicker and harder branches and shrubs. It features an efficient SAFETOUCH™ system that provides a secure grip thanks to the non-slip handle surface. They can be extended up to 31 cm for greater reach. The Cellfast secateurs shown are designed for thick elements with a maximum diameter of 45 mm. Thanks to the use of gears, you do not need to exert maximum effort when using the tool.

Scissor secateurs FISKARS Powergear 1023630

Representative of Fiskars, a manual scissor pruner allows you to cut shoots and branches with a diameter of up to 20 mm. Chrome molybdenum vanadium steel is excellent for cutting plants without fear of corrosion. The lever responsible for the blockade is located on the top of the pruner, due to which the blockade is carried out with the help of the thumb. This model also features the PowerGear™ system, which greatly improves the use of applied cutting force.

Scissor secateurs FISKARS Smartfit P68

The profile of the handle and the location of the blade lock mechanism are slightly different from its predecessor. It is great for very fresh branches and stems that need to be removed from your garden. The maximum cutting diameter is 24mm, which makes it very compact and useful. Do not overdo it with the thickness of the branches due to the need to apply a lot of effort to the cut. The model provides a special adjustment of the distance between the handles, which allows you to fit the tool to the user's hand.

Scissor secateurs FISKARS Quantum L104

The last of the instances visible in the list is definitely adapted for special tasks. The robust and reliable PowerGrip gearbox makes it easy to cut even the thickest and hardest parts. The weight of the tool, which is 1,19 kg, means that even long hours of work with this pruner will not be burdensome. This is definitely an offer for the most demanding gardeners.
