Secure your car with a radio controlled locking system!

The radio-controlled locking system has become a convenient feature. But it was not always so. At present, few people remember bulky systems in which each door had to be opened separately.

Even more convenient is the use of a remote control to lock the car. All manufacturers offer this solution in the list of accessories. The accessory shop offers a variety of retrofit systems. In addition, for old used cars, the question of whether did you forget to lock the car , is no longer a problem thanks to the upgrade options.

Better spend some beans more

High quality and rubbish can be found side by side when it comes to a radio lock system. Shopping on the cheap sooner or later can turn into an unpleasant surprise: you may be denied access to the car or the car will not be locked . It is important to make a choice in favor of quality. Consumer information and customer reviews can help you further.

Which system is preferred?

Modern radio control systems for locks have reached a high technical level . Even a remote control with a button is no longer the best choice. RFID systems are now available that automatically unlock the vehicle when approached, further enhancing driving comfort.

The complexity of the system is partly reflected in the price . It also applies here: Watch out for quality and don't let yourself be blinded by all sorts of functional promises.

Currently available:
– individual transmitters
– transmitters with built-in key
– transmitters with proximity sensor
– Transmitters with proximity sensor and built-in key

Systems with a proximity sensor always have an additional button for unlocking.

Installation of a radio-controlled locking system

Installing a radio-controlled locking system requires significant intervention in the car's electronics . Installation should only be carried out by persons with the necessary knowledge and skills. In particular, you should learn how to handle insulating pliers, crimping pliers and several plug systems. If you are not familiar with these procedures, we recommend that you practice with old cables. Incorrect electrical connection can lead to serious problems at a later stage.

The radio-controlled locking system usually offers the following functions as a retrofit option:
– Central locking and opening of all car doors
– Option: car trunk
– Option: fuel cap (rarely available as retrofit)
– Sound signal when opening or locking
- turn signal activation impulse
- turn on low beam
- separate opening and locking of the trunk

The user can define the scope of his remote controlled central locking system . If only a part of the additional functions is required, the wiring of the remaining functions is not connected.

The following tools are required to install the radio lock system:
– insulating pliers
- crimping pliers
- set of tools
- plastic clip remover
– container for small screws. Tip: Have a Large Magnet Handy
- screeds
– mounting kit
– cordless screwdriver with a thin metal drill
- multimeter

Drive installation

  • Electric drives are installed in the locking mechanism behind the door trim . Window openers, armrests and door trim can be removed . The car window must be completely closed to prevent damage when working on the door.
  • Actuators are small electric motors or electromagnets . When activated, they pull wire, opening the locking mechanism . The connection consists of a rigid wire, which allows the actuator to perform both a pulling and a pushing movement.
  • The drive is fixed to the inner panel of the door with two bolts. . Note: don't confuse it with the outer door panel! The inner panel sometimes already has fitting holes. In most cases, they need to be drilled by yourself.
  • The connecting wire of the actuator is attached to the locking mechanism with two screws, which allows adjustment of the actuator . Its function must correspond to the required movement of the locking system. The screws can be adjusted accordingly.
  • Cables run through flexible cable tunnel between body and interior .

Installing the control unit

  • The control unit can be installed anywhere . Its ideal location is under the dashboard . From the point of view of convenience, the central locking control unit is most convenient to hide left or right in the footwell under the dashboard . The control unit is connected to the door wiring and to the vehicle's power supply. As a rule, it is necessary to separate the permanent positive cable and the earth cable. The accessory shop offers suitable cable branching modules. Skills in handling these tools are required. This operation should be preliminarily worked out on the old cable section. Suitable cables can be found on your car radio.Red and black cables branch out easily to power the central lock .
  • The exact connection of the radio remote control system to the ignition can be found in the installation manual. . As a general rule, the car should automatically lock when starting off. In this way, access from outside, for example at traffic lights, is reliably prevented. The central locking can only do this if the ignition and control box are properly connected. An additional switch is required to activate and unlock the internal locking system.
  • Several cables need to be run through the dashboard . A simple trick can help here . A thick, rigid cable is inserted into the top of the dashboard until it exits at the control box at the other end. The control box cables are secured with tape at the end and the cable can be pulled out again by gently pulling the control box cables through the dashboard.

functional test

Functional test of the central lock

If everything is connected correctly, the central locking is tested first, checking if the servomotors actually lock and unlock the doors . While the door trim is not installed, the screws can be adjusted. During testing, the remote control can be programmed. See the documentation materials for the correct procedure. Typically, seven handheld transmitters can be programmed for remote control. Additional programming of the control unit is not required.

The following errors may occur:

  • No function: control unit is not connected. The battery is disabled. The ignition is on. Check polarity and power supply.
  • The remote clicks but does not work: the key is in the ignition, the car door is open, the central locking control is faulty or there is no communication. Remove ignition key, close all doors, check cables.
  • Transmitter not working: The transmitter has not yet been programmed or its internal battery is too low. Program the transmitter again (see documentation), replace the battery.
  • Transmitter operation is unsatisfactory: poor reception, battery voltage too low, rewire the control unit antenna cable, replace the battery.

While you are busy with this....

While you're removing the door trim, while you're working on the car's electronics, this is a good time to think. about installing power windows, door handle lighting, footwell lighting and other comfort features . Door trim clips are not suitable for repeated removal and installation. Therefore, it makes sense to carry out all settings at the same time in order to avoid unnecessary damage to the upholstery.
Ultimately the door trim and, if necessary, the dashboard trim are reinstalled .

Other advantages of the radio-controlled locking system

A properly installed radio-controlled lock will not allow the car to be locked while the key is in the ignition. This reliably prevents locking yourself outside the vehicle.
