Mechanisms for the formation of moisture in the gas tank and the consequences of this phenomenon

There are two main routes for water to enter a fuel tank.

  1. Normal condensation from the air. Water vapor is always present in the atmosphere to some extent. When in contact with hard surfaces (especially at low temperatures), moisture condenses into droplets. The gas tank cap of the simplest design has a hole through which air from the environment enters it when the fuel level drops (excessive pressure is also vented through this valve). This prevents the formation of a vacuum. In more advanced gas tank designs, so-called adsorbers are provided. However, in any case, air from outside enters the tank, moisture condenses into drops and flows to the bottom.
  2. Water-enriched gasoline when refueling at gas stations with a low level of control. The water level, as well as the content of paraffins, octane number and many other indicators must be strictly controlled for each batch of fuel entering the gas station tanks. However, often the analysis is approached negligently or they turn a blind eye to an unacceptably large amount of water. And right from the gun at the gas station, water enters the tank.

Most fuel tanks are equipped with a special recess, the so-called sump. It accumulates water and other heavy impurities. However, the capacity of this reservoir is limited. And sooner or later, water will begin to flow into the fuel system. This can cause several negative consequences.

  • Freezing of water in the fuel line, filter, pump and even injectors. Will lead to partial or complete failure of the fuel system. This problem is often found on older cars during winter operation.
  • Accelerated corrosion of metal parts of the fuel system. Water initiates corrosion processes.
  • Unstable operation of the motor. When driving on a rough road with a critical level of moisture in the gas tank, the fuel intake will partially pick up water. This will cause engine malfunction.

To prevent this phenomenon, fuel dryers have been created.

How do fuel dryers work?

The main task of any fuel dryer is to smoothly remove water from the gas tank with minimal consequences for the engine. The work of these funds can be conditionally divided into 2 stages.

  1. Mixing with fuel and binding water at the structural level. It is important to understand here that none of the dehumidifiers performs chemical transformations with water molecules. Active components are only bonded to water molecules not due to atomic, but due to molecular forces of interaction. The resulting bundles of water molecules and alcohols of the desiccant are approximately equal in density to the fuel. That is, they do not fall out. And evenly mixed with fuel.
  2. Removal of moisture in bound form from the tank. Together with the fuel, the desiccant molecules carry water out of the tank. In this form, when moisture enters the combustion chamber in minimal quantities, it practically does not affect the operation of the fuel system and the engine as a whole.

All manufacturers use the same active substances - alcohols that can bind with water. And the effectiveness of this or that additive is largely determined by the concentration of these alcohols. To a lesser extent, the presence of additional components that improve the activity of the active substance and reduce the aggressive effect of the composition. Approximately the same opinion is shared by motorists. In the reviews, the following idea is increasingly traced: the more expensive the tool, the more efficiently it works.

Popular fuel dryers

Consider the most popular products intended mainly for winter use. That is, when the problem is most urgent.

  1. Liqui Moly Fuel Protect. Suitable exclusively for petrol engines. Not only binds and removes water, but also defrosts ice deposits on the bottom of the tank. The most expensive of all options. It has repeatedly proven its effectiveness in laboratory and real conditions.
  2. Hi-Gear Gas Dryer Winter Cleaner. A tool designed for gasoline engines. It has the same action as the additive from Liquid Moli. According to some reports, it works somewhat more efficiently and costs less.
  3. Lavr Universal Winter Fuel Dryer. A universal product that is equally well suited for both diesel and gasoline engines. It works somewhat worse than competitors, but at the same time it costs less and is combined with any power systems. Often used by drivers in the off-season for prevention.

As tests have shown, all of the above dehumidifiers work. Efficiency is generally directly proportional to price.
