P2294 Open circuit of control of the fuel pressure regulator 2

OBD-II DTC Datasheet

Open circuit of control of the fuel pressure regulator 2

What does this mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles (GMC, Chevy, Chrsyler, Dodge, Jeep, Mitsubishi, VW, Toyota, etc.). Although general in nature, the specific repair steps may differ depending on the brand / model.

A stored code P2294 means the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an open control circuit in the electronic fuel pressure regulator (labeled 2). This designation is used on systems that include multiple electronic fuel pressure regulators. This type of designation may refer to a group of engines, but is not exclusive. In addition, the word "open" can be changed to "disabled" or "broken".

The electronic fuel pressure regulator is usually controlled by the PCM. The battery voltage signal and the ground signal are used to control the servomotor, which sets the valve so that the desired fuel pressure level can be achieved for any given set of circumstances. When voltage is applied to the electronic fuel pressure regulator servomotor, the valve opens in small increments and the fuel pressure increases. When the voltage decreases, the servo will retract and a strong spring forces the valve to close; the fuel pressure drops.

The fuel pressure sensor (usually located in the fuel injector rail) allows the PCM to monitor the fuel pressure and adjust the fuel pressure regulator voltage accordingly.

The fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure sensor can be separate components, but most often they are combined into a single housing with one electrical connector.

If the actual fuel pressure does not match the desired fuel pressure as calculated by the PCM, P2294 may persist and a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may illuminate.

Related Fuel Pressure Regulator Engine Codes:

  • P2293 Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 Performance
  • P2295 Low indicator of the fuel pressure regulator control circuit 2
  • P2296 A high rate of the fuel pressure regulator control circuit 2

Symptoms and severity

Excessive fuel pressure can lead to various handling problems as well as damage to the internal engine and catalytic converter. For this reason, the P2294 code should be classified as serious.

Symptoms of a P2294 code may include:

  • Delayed start
  • Black smoke from the exhaust system
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Engine Control Codes may also accompany P2294.

reasons

Possible reasons for setting this code:

  • Short circuit or open in the wiring and / or connectors in the fuel pressure regulator control circuit
  • Defective fuel pressure regulator
  • Defective fuel rail pressure sensor
  • Bad PCM or PCM programming error

Diagnostic and repair procedures

Diagnosing a P2294 code will require a diagnostic scanner, a digital volt / ohmmeter (DVOM), a suitable fuel pressure sensor, and a reliable source of vehicle information (such as All Data DIY).

NOTE: Take extra care when connecting a hand-held fuel gauge. High pressure fuel that comes into contact with hot surfaces or an open spark can ignite and cause a dangerous vehicle fire.

I usually start by visually inspecting the system wiring and connectors; focusing on the harnesses and connectors at the top of the engine. The heat associated with this area makes it a popular pest in cold climates. These pests can damage (gnaw through) the wiring and connectors of the system.

My next task will be to connect the scanner to the vehicle diagnostic port and retrieve the stored codes and freeze frame data. I write this information down because it can be helpful in the diagnostic process. Now, if possible, I would clear the codes and test drive the car.

If the code resets immediately, check the voltage and ground at the fuel pressure regulator. If no voltage is detected, check the power supply relay and fuses according to the wiring diagram obtained from the vehicle information source. If there is no ground, follow the wiring diagram to find a suitable ground for the fuel pressure regulator control system and make sure they are all secure.

If there is voltage and ground at the fuel pressure control regulator, obtain the fuel pressure characteristics from your vehicle information source and check the pressure in the fuel system with a pressure gauge. Carefully follow the manufacturer's recommendations for connecting the fuel gauge. Observe the fuel system data with the scanner while visually checking the fuel pressure manually with the fuel gauge. If the fuel pressure shown on the scanner data display does not match the actual fuel pressure, suspect a fuel pressure sensor malfunction.

Fluctuations in the actual fuel pressure should occur with changes in the control voltage of the fuel pressure regulator. If not, suspect that the fuel pressure regulator is defective, there is an open or short in one of the fuel pressure regulator control circuits, or that the PCM is defective.

Follow manufacturer's recommendations for testing the electronic fuel pressure regulator and individual fuel pressure regulator control circuits with DVOM. Disconnect controllers from the circuit before testing with DVOM to prevent damage to control modules.

Additional diagnostic notes:

  • The fuel rail and associated components can be under high pressure. Use caution when removing the fuel pressure sensor or fuel pressure regulator.
  • Switch off the ignition to connect / disconnect the fuel pressure sensor.
