Why the turbo engine should not idle in the cold

In many parts of the world, cars are prohibited from standing in one place with the engine running, which means that their drivers are subject to sanctions. However, this is by no means the only reason to avoid prolonged idling of the vehicle.

In this case, we are talking mainly about the increasingly modern and widely used turbo engines. Their resource is limited - not so much in mileage, but in the number of engine hours. That is, prolonged idling can be a problem for the unit.

Why the turbo engine should not idle in the cold

At engine speed, the oil pressure decreases, which means that it circulates less. If the unit operates in this mode for 10-15 minutes, then a limited amount of the fuel mixture enters the cylinder chambers. However, even it cannot completely burn out, which seriously increases the load on the engine. A similar problem is felt in heavy traffic jams, where the driver sometimes smells unburned fuel. This can lead to overheating of the catalyst.

Another problem in such cases is the formation of soot on candles. Soot adversely affects their performance, reducing functionality. Accordingly, fuel consumption increases and power decreases. The most harmful for the engine is its operation in the cold period, especially in winter, when it is colder outside.

Experts advise otherwise - the engine (both turbo and atmospheric) cannot be stopped immediately after the end of the trip. In this case, the problem is that with this action, the water pump is turned off, which accordingly leads to the cessation of cooling of the motor. Thus, it overheats and soot appears in the combustion chamber, which affects the resource.

In addition, as soon as the ignition is turned off, the voltage regulator stops working, but the generator, driven by the crankshaft, continues to power the vehicle's electrical system. Accordingly, it can seriously affect its operation and functionality. It is in order to avoid such problems that experts advise that the car run for 1-2 minutes after the end of the trip.
