Semi-automatic transmission - a compromise between mechanics and automatic?

Internal combustion vehicles are equipped with gearboxes. This is due to the characteristics of a fuel-powered engine, which has a fairly narrow range of revolutions in which its operation is effective. Depending on the car model, different methods of gear shifting are used. Manual, semi-automatic and automatic transmissions are different. Read on to find out more!

What is the gearbox responsible for?

The primary task of the gearbox is to transmit torque to the wheels of the car. It comes from the piston-crank system and reaches the gearbox through the clutch. Inside it are racks (gears) that are responsible for certain gear ratios and allow the car to accelerate without constantly maintaining the engine at high speeds.

Semi-automatic transmission - what is it and how does it work?

There are 3 categories of gearboxes on the market, the division of which is based on the way the gearbox is selected:

  1. in manual solutions, the driver himself selects a specific gear and engages it using a lever and clutch;
  2. semi-automatic transmission is also based on the choice of the driver, but the inclusion of a specific gear is controlled by the controller;
  3. in automatic systems, the computer determines the specific gear, and the driver has little influence on its selection.

Semi-automatic transmission = manual + automatic?

In intermediate solutions, i.e. semi-automatic transmissions, the designers tried to combine the greatest advantages of "mechanics" and "automatic". The free choice of gears without the need to control the clutch seems to be a very good solution. The process itself is carried out using a joystick or petals placed on the steering wheel. The sequential gearbox (semi-automatic) uses a microprocessor to disengage the clutch system when the driver selects a gear. This happens when you move the joystick up or down, or press the specific up/downshift paddle.

Automated solutions often also include solutions that provide automatic gear shifting. The airsoft gear box is basically a manual decision when it comes to construction, but thanks to the presence of an electric and hydraulic system, it can make its own choice. This occurs, for example, when the driver is selected to drive in this mode or when driving at a too low or too high implement speed.

Sequential gearbox - driving experience

First of all, this solution is a great help for the driver. If you are tired of constantly pressing the clutch pedal, an ASG or ASG Tiptronic gearbox may be right for you. You just have to get used to not using the clutch, so make sure you get used to pedaling with your left foot.

Such solutions are often equipped with automatic and manual sequential modes. Depending on the version, the car can change gears on its own if it thinks you are revving up. Some drivers also complain about downshifting when braking without their explicit command. To move comfortably in such a vehicle, you will need some knowledge and a little patience.

The car is started as in cars with an “automatic” - you must have the brake pressed and the lever in the neutral position. After that, the semi-automatic transmission will allow you to turn on the ignition. After you have shifted into gear and released the brake, you must also step on the gas to make the car accelerate.

Although a semi-automatic is convenient, sometimes it can be difficult. Drivers complain of delayed gear changes or jerks when driving fast. The durability isn't perfect either. If you decide to buy a used car with such a gearbox, bet on proven solutions and take care of the diagnosis.
