Regeneration of DPF filters and catalysts

A similar role in the car is played by the DPF filter and the catalytic converter - they purify the exhaust gases from harmful substances. Find out how they differ and what regeneration of DPF filters and catalysts looks like.

DPF filter - what is it?

The diesel particulate filter or DPF filter is a device located in the vehicle's exhaust system. It is made of a ceramic insert and a body resistant to high temperatures. The cartridge is designed to filter the exhaust gases coming out of the car, and the housing protects the filter from mechanical damage.

What is a catalyst?

A catalytic converter, called an automotive catalyst, is an exhaust system element that reduces the amount of harmful compounds in exhaust gases. There are emissions standards that every car must meet. For this reason, catalytic converters are now installed in every car.

DPF filter and catalytic converter - comparison

Both of these parts perform a similar function - exhaust gas cleaning. They may have a similar structure, but they are completely different devices that perform different functions and one does not replace the other. Of course, the fact that they wear out quickly and you will have to regenerate the catalysts and DPF filters can be added to the similarity. These elements work on completely different principles.

How does a DPF filter work?

The DPF filter cleans the exhaust gases of soot and ash particles. It has a simple design, similar to the middle muffler. Sometimes self-cleaning occurs by cauterization. It has channels with porous walls arranged parallel to each other. Some of them are muted at the entrance, others at the exit. The alternating arrangement of tubules creates a kind of grid. When the fuel mixture is burned, the ceramic insert heats up to a high temperature, reaching several hundred degrees Celsius, which burns out soot particles. The pores on the walls of the channels trap soot particles in the filter, after which they are burned in a process initiated by the electronic control unit. If this process is not performed properly, the filter will become clogged and stop working properly. Filter damage can also be accelerated by other factors such as poor quality fuel, poor engine condition, or poor turbine condition. If you don't cover long distances daily and do a lot of city driving, it's worth taking longer trips from time to time - preferably on a route where you can reach higher speeds. Thanks to this, you can keep the DPF filter functioning properly.

How does the catalyst work?

Catalysts have a simple cylindrical structure and may resemble a muffler. They are made of ceramic or metal insert and stainless steel body. The cartridge is the heart of the catalyst. Its design resembles a honeycomb, and each cell is covered with a layer of precious metal, which is designed to neutralize harmful substances in the exhaust gases. Thanks to this, only compounds that do not harm it get into the environment. For proper operation of the catalyst, it is necessary to bring it to the desired temperature, which ranges from 400 to 800 degrees Celsius.

Regeneration of DPF filters

Regeneration of DPF filters and catalysts

DPF filter regeneration is a process by which we avoid costly replacement of a filter with a new one. There are several methods of regeneration, one of them is ultrasonic cleaning. However, this carries a certain risk, since it can lead to crumbling of the ceramic insert.

A reliable solution is the hydrodynamic cleaning system. The filter is disassembled, its condition is checked, followed by bathing in hot water with the addition of a softener. The last step is to place the filter in a machine that knocks the ash out of the channels using high pressure water. After completion of the work, the filter is dried, painted and installed in the car.

Regeneration of catalysts

The catalyst regeneration process is quite simple, but the service will not undertake it if there is mechanical damage. Regeneration consists in opening the catalyst, replacing the cartridge and re-closing. There is a chance that you will have to weld its body.
