Renault Scénic 1.6 16V Expression Comfort

So were our expectations wrong when we put a 1.6 16V motor ahead of a 2.0 16V motor when choosing the Scenic motorization? For everyone who is satisfied with a short and laconic answer, it reads: “Yes, expectations were fully confirmed! "

For everyone else who does not want to stop there, we have prepared a more detailed description of the Scénica 1.6 16V. In it we will more or less touch on most parts of the car, so let's start from the beginning; on the transmission.

This is a good average among gasoline engines, as it features, among other things, lightweight construction, four-valve technology in the head, adjustable intake valve timing and electrical connection of the accelerator pedal to the throttle valve. ... The result: smooth operation of the engine regardless of the number of revolutions and good responsiveness and flexibility of the unit throughout the entire engine speed range.

Unfortunately, only the five-speed manual transmission spoils the relatively good average of the engine's design, whereas in the two-liter version it is the six-speed. In the Scénic 1.6 16V, all gears are recalculated in much the same way as in the six-speed Scénica 2.0 16V gearbox, so the additional sixth gear of the latter is actually intended to reduce engine speed when driving on the highway.

Lower engine speed translates into both lower cab noise and more economical fuel consumption. If we believe you that the 1-liter engine in our test consumed an average of 6 liters less (0 L / 7 km) than its XNUMX-liter sibling, then you might think that consumption would probably be even lower if the transmission was also a sixth gear. Likewise, extra gear will definitely help reduce noise.

The 1-liter Scénic is louder than the 6-liter version at 130 kilometers per hour, despite the fact that they have approximately the same (not) effective soundproofing. Thus, road traffic in the Scénic 1.6 16V is louder mainly due to the higher engine rpm, as its engine in fifth gear spins a good XNUMX rpm faster than the engine in the two-liter Scénic in sixth gear.

You already know that the main features of the Scénic interior are very good flexibility in available space, good inventory with almost all of today's "must-have" safety equipment, a basic below average boot, plenty of (conventionally used) storage space and a slightly rearranged steering wheel. What you don't know, however, is that in bad weather you want Renault to improve on some of the active safety features while driving.

First on the list of desirable improvements is the rear window wiper. Because the rear window is vertical and low, it is very small and thus only wipes half of the glass surface. This leaves roughly 25 centimeters wide strips on both sides of the glass, limiting rear visibility.

In addition, when driving in the rain, water flows from the windshield onto the side triangular window. Especially in the event of an impact, there is the left side, which receives much more water from the driver's wiper than the right side of the car. This phenomenon would not be worth mentioning if the driver's gaze in the door mirrors were not directed precisely through the aforementioned triangular windows, which are thus almost useless due to the abundance of water.

Let us pause for a moment at the back of the passenger's head, where we have confirmed another of our expectations. On the Scénic, with its integrated panoramic roof window, we noticed that there was not enough headroom in the back seat for the heads of the last two passengers who are more than 1 meter tall. Well, with the Scénic, which lacks built-in accessories, passengers taller than 75 meters can also find more than enough room in the rear seats.

So we confirmed our expectations with the Scénica 1.6 16V. Unfortunately, we also found that some things could still be improved. Thus, the sixth gear in the transmission will improve the sound comfort while driving and further reduce the already favorable fuel consumption.

On the windshield, installing special edges on the outside of the windshield will prevent water from dripping from the wipers on the side triangular window. At the rear of the car, a flatter and taller rear window would allow for a larger wiper, which would therefore wipe a larger area of the rear window.

But we kindly ask you, if Renault fixes these shortcomings, then the Scénic 1.6 16V will already be the “kitsch” ideal car. But we really don't want that! Or what?
