We independently change the brake discs on the VAZ 2107

If the car is not able to stop in time, there can be no question of any safe driving. This rule applies to both trucks and cars. VAZ 2107 in this sense is no exception. The brakes of this car have never been famous for reliability and have always given drivers a lot of problems. And the most vulnerable point of the brakes on the "seven" has always been brake discs, the service life of which was very short. Can the car owner change these discs on his own? Yes maybe. Let's try to figure out how it's done.

Purpose and principle of operation of brake discs on a VAZ 2107

The VAZ 2107 has two brake systems: the main and additional. The main one allows the driver to reduce the speed of the car while driving. An additional system allows you to fix the rear wheels of the car after it has stopped.

The brake disc is the most important part of the VAZ 2107 brake system, without it the normal operation of the machine is impossible

Brake discs are part of the main braking system. They are located on the front axle of the VAZ 2107 and rotate with it. A caliper with brake pads and hydraulic cylinders is attached to the brake discs. As soon as the driver decides to brake and presses the pedal, brake fluid begins to flow into the hydraulic cylinders through special hoses. Under its influence, pistons are pushed out of the cylinders, pressing on the brake pads. And the pads, in turn, squeeze the brake disc on both sides. The disk, and with it the front wheels of the VAZ 2107, begin to rotate more slowly and the car slows down smoothly.

Varieties of brake discs

Like any other automotive part, brake discs have undergone significant changes over time. Today, the auto parts market has a huge range of discs that differ both in design and in the material of manufacture. It is not surprising that the modern car owner is lost among this diversity. Therefore, let's talk about disks in more detail.

About Disc Materials

The best material for brake discs today is carbon and ceramic. A disc made from these materials is characterized by a high margin of safety, and most importantly, it is extremely resistant to high temperatures.

Carbon-ceramic brake discs are highly reliable and high-priced

In addition, carbon discs weigh little (this circumstance is especially true for owners of racing cars, where every kilogram counts). Of course, such discs also have disadvantages, the main of which is the price, which is far from affordable for everyone. In addition, these carbon discs perform best in extreme loads and temperatures. And if the driving style of the car owner is far from aggressive, the wheels will not demonstrate all their advantages without first warming up.

Another popular material for brake discs is plain carbon steel. It is these discs that are installed on the "seven" when it leaves the assembly line. Advantages of steel disks are obvious: extremely low price. Cheaper just for free. The disadvantages are also obvious: a tendency to corrosion, high weight and low wear resistance.

Design features of brake discs

By design, brake discs are divided into several large classes. Here they are:

  • discs without ventilation;
  • discs with ventilation;
  • solid discs;
  • compound disks;
  • radial discs.

Now let's take a closer look at each type of disk.

  1. A non-ventilated brake disc is an ordinary steel or carbon plate without holes or recesses. In some cases, small notches may be present on the surface of this plate to improve air circulation near the surface of the rotating disk.

    Non-ventilated brake discs do not have holes in the outer ring
  2. Ventilated discs have holes. Most often they are through, but in some cases in their place there may be recesses of various shapes (the so-called blind holes). The advantage of ventilated discs is obvious: they cool better, and therefore, the brakes can work longer under extreme loads. In addition, these discs weigh a little. But they also have a drawback: the strength of ventilated discs is significantly reduced due to perforation, which means that the service life is also reduced.
    We independently change the brake discs on the VAZ 2107
    The main difference between ventilated brake discs is the abundance of holes on the outer rings.
  3. One-piece wheels are produced by casting. These are monolithic metal plates, which, after casting, are subjected to further heat treatment to obtain the required mechanical properties.
  4. The composite disc is a structure consisting of a ring and a hub. The ring can be either steel or cast iron. But the hub is always made of some kind of light alloy, most often on an aluminum basis. Recently, the demand for composite disks has increased significantly, which is not surprising. They weigh little, cool quickly, and are well ventilated. In addition, the operation of composite brake discs is cheaper for the car owner: if the ring has become completely unusable, it is enough just to replace it. In this case, the hub can not be changed, since it wears out much more slowly.
    We independently change the brake discs on the VAZ 2107
    Compound brake discs consist of a light hub and a heavy outer ring.
  5. Radial discs on passenger cars began to be installed relatively recently. These are ventilated discs, however, the ventilation system in them is not through holes, but long curved channels that start from the disc hub and diverge towards its edges. The system of radial channels provides a strong turbulence of the air flow and maximum cooling of the brake disc. Radial discs are very durable and reliable, and their only drawback is the high price.

    The main difference between radial discs is the long grooves that run from the center of the disc to its edges.

Brake disc manufacturers

As a rule, car owners, having discovered the wear of one or two brake discs, are in no hurry to replace them with standard VAZ ones, bearing in mind their mediocre quality. But since the spare parts market is now literally littered with discs from various manufacturers, the novice driver is completely confused by such an abundance. What firms to give preference? We list the most popular.

Allied Nippon wheels

Allied Nippon is a manufacturer very well known in the domestic auto parts market. This company specializes mainly in brake pads and clutch discs, but also produces brake discs that are suitable for "sevens".

Allied Nippon discs have always been distinguished by the best combination of price and quality

Allied Nippon discs are made from high quality cast iron and are rigorously tested three times for size and balance. The company manufactures both ventilated and non-ventilated discs, which are almost always supplied with brake pads. The manufacturer guarantees that the brake systems supplied by him will cover at least 50 thousand km before the first breakdown. And finally, the price of Allied Nippon discs is more than democratic, and starts from 2200 rubles per set.

ASP disks

The ASP company is widely known not only in Europe, but also among domestic owners of the VAZ "classics". On the Russian market, predominantly non-ventilated brake discs are presented, including those suitable for the VAZ 2107.

ASP discs have the highest wear resistance and reasonable price

ASP discs are machined on high precision machines and are 100 times checked for balance and dimensions. They have the highest wear resistance: the manufacturer guarantees that they are able to travel at least 1500 thousand km before the first breakdown. In fact, the only drawback of ASP drives is their considerable weight, but this disadvantage is more than offset by an attractive price, which starts from XNUMX rubles per set.

Wheels Alnas

Another major manufacturer of high-quality brake discs is Alnas. Produces mainly ventilated discs with a variety of perforations. Recently, the assortment has been replenished with radial discs with different notches. Alnas products are in demand primarily among drivers involved in tuning their cars and among drivers who prefer an aggressive driving style. New discs are able to travel at least 80 thousand km before the first breakdown. They are distinguished by their low weight, and the price, taking into account their sporting purpose, bites: the cheapest set will cost the driver 2900 rubles.

We independently change the brake discs on the VAZ 2107
Alnas rims are designed for drivers with an aggressive driving style

Here, perhaps, are all the major manufacturers of brake discs, the products of which should be looked at by the owner of the "seven". Of course, there are many smaller firms that are very aggressively promoting their wheels in the auto parts market. But the quality of their products often leaves much to be desired, so it makes no sense to mention them in this article.

So what wheels should a novice driver choose?

When choosing wheels, you should proceed from two things: driving style and wallet size. If the driver prefers aggressive driving, reliable brakes and is not constrained by funds, then Alnas products will be the best choice. If a person is used to driving carefully, and the main criterion for him is durability and reliability, you should buy ASP wheels. And finally, if money is tight, but high-quality ventilated discs are still needed, the last option remains - Allied Nippon.

Signs of broken brake discs

There are a number of characteristic signs that clearly indicate that something is wrong with the brake discs. Let's list them:

  • brake pedal beat. The driver, pressing the brake pedal, feels a strong vibration. It usually occurs due to severe wear of the brake pads, the protective coating of which has worn off to the metal base. But even the beating is also associated with the wear of the brake disc. If its surface is unevenly worn, or cracks and small grooves appear on it, this leads to vibration. It occurs when the pads squeeze the disc. Arising on the disk, the vibration is transmitted to the car body and to the brake pedal. There is only one solution: replace worn discs along with brake pads;
  • increased wear of the brake discs. There are situations when a driver, having installed new branded disks, discovers that they have become unusable without even half the life declared by the manufacturer. This is usually caused by counterfeit brake pads. It's simple: conscientious pad manufacturers add the smallest sawdust of soft metals to their protective coating. For example, copper. It is thanks to this filler that the surface of the pads wears out before the surface of the brake disc. An unscrupulous manufacturer adds steel filings to the protective coating, thus trying to save money. The result is natural: the wear of the surface of the brake disc begins. The solution to the problem is obvious: buy brake discs only complete with brake pads from one manufacturer;

    Rapid disc wear is usually due to bad brake pads.
  • disc cracks. Usually they are the result of fatigue failure of the metal. The brake disc experiences the strongest centrifugal loads, plus it is constantly exposed to high temperatures. These are ideal conditions for the appearance of the smallest fatigue cracks, which cannot be seen without a powerful microscope. Sooner or later, these small cracks begin to spread, and the speed of their propagation exceeds the speed of sound. As a result, the brake disc becomes completely unusable. An additional factor that provokes the appearance of cracks is the disc design itself: ventilated discs with perforation most often crack, and the cracks pass through several holes at once. Non-ventilated monolithic discs are much more resistant to cracking;

    Brake discs usually crack due to metal fatigue failure.
  • furrows on the disc. One of the reasons for their appearance is poor-quality pads, which were mentioned above. But besides this, furrows can also occur on a good disc with branded pads. Especially often this is observed on vehicles operated on dirt roads. The reason is simple: solid particles of sand, falling on the brake disc, are brought under the brake pads and remain there. Over time, a thin layer of hard particles forms on the surface of the pads, which begin to work as an abrasive material, continuously scratching the brake disc. If this process has not gone too far, then the problem can be solved by simply removing and thoroughly cleaning the surface of the pads. But sometimes the protective coating of the pads is so worn out that the only rational option is to replace them.

    The disc is usually covered with grooves due to clogged brake pads.

Replacing brake discs on a VAZ 2107

Before starting repair work, you should decide on the necessary tools and consumables. Here's what we need:

  • set of open-end wrenches;
  • a set of mounting blades;
  • set of spanner keys;
  • jack;
  • flat screwdriver;
  • a set of two new brake discs and four brake pads.

Sequence of work

First you have to make a few preparatory operations. The vehicle is parked on a level surface. The rear wheels are fixed with shoes and a hand brake. The front wheel on which the disk is planned to be replaced is jacked up and removed.

  1. After removing the wheel, access to the brake disc is opened. But it is held by a caliper with brake pads, which will have to be removed. First, a bracket with a hose for supplying brake fluid is unscrewed with an open-end wrench.

    To get to the brake hose, you first have to remove the bracket
  2. After removing the bolt, the bracket is moved to the side and the nut is unscrewed with an open-end wrench already on the hose itself. The hose is disconnected, and the hole in it is plugged with a 17 bolt or other suitable plug so that the brake fluid does not leak out of the system.

    As a plug for the brake hose, a 17 bolt or a piece of another hose is suitable
  3. Now you should unscrew the two fixing bolts holding the caliper to the steering knuckle. After removing the bolts, the caliper is carefully removed from the brake disc.

    The brake caliper on the VAZ 2107 rests on just two mounting bolts
  4. The brake caliper has been removed and the brake disc mount is fully accessible. One of the 19 bolts holding the car wheel is screwed into the hole on the brake disc hub (this bolt is indicated by a blue arrow in the picture). After that, the mounting blade is installed as shown in the photo (by installing the blade in this way, it can be used as a lever and keep the brake disc from turning). With the other hand, a pair of mounting bolts on the brake disc ring is unscrewed.

Installation of disc brakes on the rear axle VAZ 2107

As you know, on the rear axle of the VAZ 2107, not disc brakes were initially installed, but drum brakes, which are not very efficient. In this regard, many motorists independently replace these brakes with disc brakes. Let's consider this procedure in more detail.

Sequencing

For work, we will need the tools listed in the list above. In addition to them, we need a liquid to clean rust. Better if it is WD40.

  1. The car is jacked up, the rear wheels are removed. Opens access to the brake drums and rear axle shafts. The axle shafts are carefully wiped off dirt with a rag, and if necessary, they are treated with WD40.

    Under the circlips, green wheel bearings are visible, which should be removed
  4. Now the axle shafts are ground on a lathe so that their diameter matches the diameter of the selected brake disc (at this stage of work, the car owner will need the help of a qualified turner). After that, holes are drilled in the axle shafts for the mounting bolts of the brake disc.

  5. The axle shafts improved in this way are installed back on the rear axle of the VAZ 2107. A brake disc is installed on top of them and screwed with a pair of mounting bolts as shown in the photographs above. After fixing the disks, disk calipers with pads are installed on them, the rear wheels are installed in regular places and the car is lowered from the jacks.

Video: we put the rear disc brakes on the "classic"

So, even a novice motorist can change the front brake discs for a VAZ 2107. All that is required for this is the ability to use wrenches and a minimal understanding of the operation of a disc brake system. As for replacing the rear drum brakes with disc brakes, it will not be possible to do without the help of a qualified turner.
