And there is nothing unusual in this, because such a sharp ride, especially on the coupling half, is the main reason for the failure of this unit. A burnt clutch quickly makes itself felt, and its life is drastically reduced with each sharp acceleration. However, you can easily prevent such errors. How? First, learn how this system works.

Before sniffing the clutch, or what is it even for?

If you've ever experienced clutch pressure failure, you've learned the hard way how important it is to your vehicle. Of course, you can drive after a breakdown, shifting gears without his participation, but you can quickly finish off the starter and gearbox in this way. The clutch is responsible for transmitting the torque generated by the crank-piston system. The wheels are the final source of energy, but before that they must be driven by a gearbox with axle shafts and joints. The clutch allows you to effectively transfer torque and disengage the unit when, for example, you want to shift into gear or idle. A burnt clutch performs these tasks inefficiently.

Why does the clutch in the car burn?

A burnt clutch is a clutch disc worn to the limit, which is involved in the transfer of energy to the gearbox. They talk about the phenomenon of its burning, because in order to bring it to such wear and tear, it is necessary to create an enormous temperature due to friction, which is accompanied by a stench. Usually this does not happen once, but occurs as a result of repeated negligence in the operation of the vehicle. So why can this element deteriorate so drastically?

How can you burn a clutch in a car?

Thankfully, it's very easy. Here are the most common causes of a burnt clutch:

  • start with half-coupling;
  • fast driving and acceleration from a standstill;
  • riding with too much load.

 First of all, it leads to its misuse. What does it mean? We are talking about movement, or rather starting off on the half-coupling. This is especially painful for cars equipped with a large and powerful engine. When you start off and at the same time keep the clutch unsqueezed for a long time and accelerate, this causes a simultaneous transfer of a large torque to the clutch and its wear. A burnt clutch comes mainly from this, although not only.

Other Causes of a Burnt Clutch

Another reason is a very dynamic ride, combined with sharp acceleration from a standstill. Tire screeching is not only a pain for the joints and tires, but also for the clutch, which suddenly has to transmit almost maximum torque practically from a standstill. If you have a habit of accelerating hard in high gears under heavy load and at low engine speeds, you are also putting stress not only on the cranks and shaft, but also on the clutch. The same is true when you are towing a trailer with much more than the permitted amount of luggage.

How to recognize a burnt clutch?

One of the signs of a burnt clutch is difficult shifting into first and reverse gears. Of course, in new cars you will notice that these gears shift a little differently than the rest, but a burnt clutch will simply cause problems with them. The easiest way to feel it is when you accelerate sharply and sharply under heavy load, and preferably uphill. Then it will be difficult for you to get proper acceleration, and the tachometer needle may feel like you are accelerating on a slippery surface. This is the clutch slip effect. May occur as a result of oil leakage from the gearbox, but most often occurs when it burns out.

Clutch smell in the car - what to do?

In fact, you cannot repair the clutch without removing it. By driving responsibly and accelerating smoothly, you can only delay the replacement of these items. Driving with a burnt clutch is a killer for the flywheel, which will also begin to wear out a lot while driving. Over time, you can simply immobilize your car. So if you've been noticing clutch slippage for a while or smelling a stench under acceleration and under load, see a mechanic.

When is the problem temporary?

It can be a little different when you're driving properly and for some reason under load you were forced to hit the gas harder and the clutch would burn out. If this situation was one-time, you can keep moving. You will still experience some odor for a few days, but it should be gone. It is clear that the clutch has worked, but it may not need to be changed now. Make sure the car starts without gas and accelerates normally when you hit the gas hard. If so, you can be sure.

Burnt clutch - the cost of spare parts and replacement

Unfortunately, there is no good news here, because the cost of replacing a burned-out clutch is no small feat. The parts themselves, depending on the model of the car, can cost from several hundred zlotys to several thousand zlotys. It is not worth deciding to replace only one damaged element (clutch disc), because it may turn out that the pressure plate was enough. In addition, simply removing the gearbox and replacing elements, i.e. labor costs, is a cost of several "hundreds". So it is better to handle the clutch system with care so as not to expose yourself to a burnt clutch.

As you can see, a burned clutch is usually the result of driving style. The fatigue of this component of the car leads not only to unpleasant odors, but also to problems with starting from a place in lower gears. Therefore, it should not be underestimated and it is best to consult a specialist, although sometimes symptoms in the form of a clutch smell are temporary.
