This is how you will be greeted when you arrive on the Spanish island of Ibiza. During the summer months, this one is inundated with young tourists who come to this island for the sole purpose of having fun. Like the wild Spanish flamenco rhythms, the wild bullfights and the wild rallies where Seat made a name for itself.
We don't know if the heart of the Spaniards beats faster than us, but looking at the new Ibiza flirting like Carmen with her lovers, we cannot remain indifferent. It is no coincidence that Seat is the most sporty brand of the Volkswagen Group. In fact, they want people to think of Seat in their minds: yeah, sports cars, rallying, racing, temperamental car.
New, more sporty look
So the new Ibiza does not hide its ambition, you will recognize it in the crowd from afar, because at a time when we see more and more cars with sharp edges, it just stands out with its rounded lines. The body has been completely redesigned (the platform is the same as that of the Škoda Fabia and the new VW Polo), more aerodynamic. Convex, slightly upwardly elongated headlights that merge into rounded fenders and a convex center section of the bonnet give the vehicle a sporty character. Therefore, this car is intended for those who want to attract a few more glances from passers-by. In short, to everyone who doesn't mind if they stand out and who appreciate cars with creative designs.
Flirting with sports cars is also welcomed by the new Ibiza, with triangular rear-view mirrors and a raised sideline that ends quite high at the rear of the car. All this brings an attractive image, small rear windows, but unfortunately also poor visibility.
The rear view on the left or right is covered by the C-pillars, while the rear view over the shoulder (eg when reversing) is covered by the tall trunk. Well, here we are again about what is good for something and what is not. Because it's taller, the boot is also larger than the old Ibiza (17 liters), which can also mean one (albeit not huge) suitcase of luggage more when you hit the road. If we look at the new exterior and find ourselves in the back, we cannot miss the taillights, which are a work of art, and Porsche racing won't protect them.
Inside, the story of the new Ibiza is similar. The designers did a good job, which was complemented by the assembly of the car. Build quality is good for this class, but we found cracks in the plastic case. The driving experience is good. The seats are hard, but they promise a long life. However, the grip is such that in our case, when the Ibiza was equipped with a 1-liter four-cylinder 4-horsepower engine borrowed from the VW Golf, there was no problem, since the car's performance was low. Not to mention, it promises more on paper with 75 km of power.
With a more powerful engine in the bow, you just need more grip. Since the test Ibiza was in a three-door version, let's further record our observation about access to the back bench. This requires some flexibility as the seat does not move forward if the backrest is tilted forward. That's why we offer a five-door version to anyone using a rear bench seat. The back sits comfortably enough, there is enough space for the knees (even for adult passengers), only the feeling of tightness interferes, since the side windows are small and located quite high. But that's just the price of a sporty looking car.
However, ahead you will not experience a feeling of embarrassment. Amazingly plenty of room in width, height and length. The adjustable (three-spoke) steering wheel and the height-adjustable driver's seat weigh a lot here. The Ibiza (Stella trim) only slightly outrages the skinny interior.
It is already true that red backlit indicators at night look the way they should for a sports car. But what if we were missing a car radio all along (of course, today this is not a problem for a reasonable surcharge), that there is more shelf for storing small items and a simple holder for cans (all this smells a little bit of Volkswagen's stinginess in the interior design).
Well, you'll have to quench your thirst in roadside vacation spots, and you can whistle a song yourself so you don't get too bored in Ibiza.
Excellent brakes, good gearbox, average engine.
Much more enjoyable is the excellent performance of the semi-automatic air conditioner, which you adjust with nice (big enough) rotary knobs and you will direct the air from the rotating circular slots almost wherever you want. Such an efficient ventilation system can also be an example for larger vehicles.
All good things about the gear lever: it is simply designed and efficient, completely modeled after the Golf GTI. It fits well in the palm of your hand, and the movements are short and precise enough to make shifting fun. In fact, the drivetrain is up to the task and surprises with well-distributed gear ratios, so it's not hard to find the right combination between gear, accelerator pedal and revs (in this Ibiza, you often have to cut the gear lever.) This is especially gratifying given the fact that the engine is not quite as athletic as one might think looking at the exterior of Ibiza.
The engine can do a lot of tasks even on descents and with older passengers, but it remains very average. Consumption is also average. When driving, it rises to 8 or 9 liters, and the average test was 7 liters per 9 kilometers. Considering that the chassis provides dynamic driving and makes the Ibiza one of the best handling cars with a secure roadholding, a 100 hp car would be more appropriate. Of course, only if you like to flirt with sports riding. Anyone who doesn't like to drive the rear end, which Ibiza definitely allows, will also be pleased with this engine.
In any case, they impress with their powerful brakes, which also means greater safety. Our measurements showed that the Ibiza brakes from 100 km per hour to 0 km per hour at an enviable 44 meters without the help of an ABS. This is already very close to GTI sports cars. Thus, Seat places great emphasis on safety when using standard front airbags. Without a doubt, the safe entertainment that is trendy today in Ibiza, on the island.
