Symptoms of a Faulty Heavy Duty EGR Cooler

Symptoms

Poor Heavy Duty EGR Cooler

EGR coolers or EGR coolers He

devices that cool the exhaust gases and work in conjunction with the SCR to reduce

emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) for heavy internal combustion engines.

The purpose of the EGR cooler is to help reduce emissions and meet

current emission standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. But

what happens if your EGR cooler starts to fail? What indicators

bad EGR cooler?

There are three main signs of an EGR cooler leak:

  1. White smoke. When EGR

the cooler starts to fail, it transfers coolant from the EGR cooler

into your exhaust system. When this happens, the exhaust interacts with

this refrigerant and turns it into vapour. This "white smoke" comes out through

your exhaust system of your heavy duty engine and is a sure sign of EGR

    refusal.
  1. Missing

coolant from your D gas/overflow tank
. When your gas is D/overflow

no coolant, but you don't see any signs

external leakage (i.e. dripping under the vehicle) is a severe

indicates that your EGR cooler has an internal leak. As a result, this

drains coolant from the exhaust system, which

creates the possibility of engine overheating or in this case "white

    smoke".
  1. Dirty EGR valve, Majority

An effective way to determine if your EGR is failing is to physically look at

This. If you remove the valve, which is located at the top of the engine

next to the oil filter, it should be filled with dry black carbon deposits (soot)

that of the exhaust system. If you have a faulty EGR cooler,

the dry carbon will be replaced by a black slime like substance. This

caused by hot coolant reacting with hot exhaust and steam fouling

    your EGR valve.

If you have ANY of these three symptoms, it is severe

an indicator that your EGR cooler is out of order.
