Symptoms of a Bad or Faulty Clutch Cable

If your manual car's transmission is slipping out of gear or the clutch pedal is tight or sinks to the floor, you may need to replace the clutch cable.

The clutch cable is a steel braided cable used on manual transmission vehicles that connects the transmission's clutch linkage to the clutch pedal mechanism. When the pedal is depressed, the clutch cable tightens the clutch linkage, disengaging the clutch and allowing safe gear changes. When the clutch cable starts to have problems, it can cause problems with the car's shifting, which impairs its handling. Usually, a problematic clutch cable has several symptoms that can alert the driver to a problem and need to fix it.

1. Gearbox slips out of gear

A bad clutch cable can sometimes cause the transmission to slip and shift out of gear. This usually happens when it is accelerating and under heavy load. This will obviously reduce the car's handling, as it will have to be constantly put back into gear every time it jumps out.

2. Hard clutch pedal

Another sign of a clutch cable problem is a tight clutch pedal. A pinched or stuck cable will not be able to move when the pedal is depressed, causing the pedal to resist pushing when pressed. Continuing to push the pedal with resistance may cause the cable to break, causing the clutch pedal to become inoperable.

3. Clutch pedal sinks to the floor

Another symptom and more serious problem is the clutch pedal sinking to the floor. If, for any reason, the clutch cable breaks or breaks, the clutch pedal will disengage from the clutch linkage, resulting in almost zero resistance when the pedal is depressed. This will obviously result in the vehicle not being able to shift into gear and will be out of control.

The clutch cable is an easy-to-use and easy-to-build component, however, if it fails, it can lead to problems that can make it impossible to drive the vehicle. For this reason, if you suspect your clutch cable may have a problem, have your vehicle checked by a professional technician such as AvtoTachki to determine if your vehicle needs a clutch cable replacement.
