“Speed kills. Turn on your thinking"

“Speed kills. Turn on your thinking" In connection with the campaign launched "Speed kills. Turn on your thinking ”, the National Road Safety Council in cooperation with the Automotive Industry Institute organized a conference during which a passenger car cash-test was presented to make people aware of the consequences of an accident on the road.

“Speed kills. Turn on your thinking" The campaign began on March 21 and is expected to last until May 6, i.e. in the period of particularly intense vehicle traffic related to spring and holiday trips outside the city. According to its organizers, the failure to adapt the driving speed to the road conditions and exceeding the speed limit have been the main cause of road accidents in Poland for many years.

During the conference at the Automotive Industry Institute (PIMOT), the so-called a cash-test, i.e. a demonstration of a passenger car hitting a fixed obstacle at a speed of about 80 km / h. It is worth noting that this is one of the few research trials in Europe carried out at vehicle speeds above 70 km / h.

“Speed kills. Turn on your thinking" The effects of the impact leave no illusions. In fact, no one traveling by car would have a chance to survive, and 80 km / h is the speed at which we travel through the streets of our cities very often.

In 2009, there were 44 185 road accidents in Poland, in which 4 people were killed and 572 injured. During that time, 56 road collisions were reported to the police. And although there is a clear decrease in the number of road accidents and the number of fatalities, events caused by the speed not being adapted to traffic conditions last year accounted for as much as 028 percent. of all recorded accidents (381), in which 769 people were killed (31% of all fatalities) and 10 were injured (910%).

-The main goal of the nationwide campaign "Speed kills. Turn on thinking ”is to provoke a public discussion on what to do to make the fall in the number of road accidents in Poland a trend“Speed kills. Turn on your thinking" permanent, creating a social movement of not accepting excessive speed and changing the stereotypical thinking about the causes of accidents - said Radosław Stępień, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure.

In response to the terrible state of safety on Polish roads, the Ministry of Infrastructure has prepared a draft amendment to the Road Traffic Act.

-The purpose of the planned changes is to increase the level of road safety. According to the current regulations, a driver who has exceeded the permitted number of penalty points is referred to a control exam, which actually stresses the driver, but does not educate the driver. The idea is to review the knowledge of those who break the rules. We will introduce a re-education course, which will aim to recall the regulations and make people aware of the dangers that occur on the road, which is much more useful than just passing the exam - explains Chief Commissioner Adam Jasiński from the Police Headquarters.
