Stable mountain bike video is possible!

For several years now, many of us have been using onboard cameras. Earlier it was noted with surprise that an athlete with his onboard camera is now as common as a customer who walks out with a baguette from a bakery.

The number of videos is growing at an impressive rate and many of them are distributing their content online.

With this material, in all sports, we can bring back images captured in the heart of the action. Unfortunately, these cameras have a major drawback: stabilization. Despite the development of software to limit these tremors, the problem persists. Whether it's the camera electronics (like the Hypersmooth mode in GoPro) or the use of solutions in editing software: it's not bad, but it's always moving.

A perfectly filmed video can quickly become irreversible if it is not stabilized and the sanctions are not subject to lifting: the public is turning to videos that offer this stability. It is unthinkable to watch flickering video on 4k TV today.

There is a solution to this problem: a gyro stabilizer when firing.

Gyro stabilizer, how does it work?

A gyro stabilizer or "suspension" is a material designed for mechanical stabilization. Most often, it consists of 3 motorized ball joints, each of which has a well-defined role:

  • The first ball joint controls the “tilt”, i.e. up/down tilt.
  • One second “rotation” clockwise/counterclockwise
  • third “panorama”: left / right, right / left rotation.

These three motors require energy to carry out their tasks. Therefore, they are powered by cells or batteries.

The system supplied in this way is capable, using accelerometers, powerful algorithms and a microcontroller, to control 3 motors to suppress unwanted movements and save only arbitrary movements. Modes allow different behaviors depending on the product, which we will not explain here.

How to use it on mountain bikes?

Traditionally, the gyro is associated with a handle that allows it to be held in the hand. Practical when stationary when stationary, while driving, it can be combined with a RAM mounting kit on the steering wheel. However, there are models without a handle, and these are the ones that are the best to invest in for our favorite sport.

Indeed, in the case of the Zhiyun rider M 3 or Feiyu-tech WG2X axles, many accessories can be added, such as a handle, ¼” screw thread, to attach it to a seat belt, such as a helmet.

Safety measures

The side chamber is attached to the suspension. This pair, attached to a helmet, hanger or harness, becomes very vulnerable to falls, branches, etc. Therefore, it is advisable to choose a moderate speed and take risks. 🧐

It also remains to manage the weather and temperature. Some gyro stabilizers are waterproof while others are not. You should also check if your camera (which is attached to a gyroscope without a housing) is waterproof or not. Therefore, depending on the equipment, we will give preference to walks without the risk of rain.

If the temperature is very low, the autonomy will be greatly reduced. But a gyro requires much less power than a camera. Think about extra batteries (and charged ones, of course).
