Wheel bearing in a car: functions, breakdowns and tips for caring for it

What is the function of a wheel bearing?

The wheel bearing and the wheel hub that works with it are the parts that connect the wheels to the car. The bearing fixes and stabilizes the wheel; without the bearing, its correct operation is impossible, i.e. thanks to him, the wheel can rotate on a fixed axle of the suspension.

There are many types and generations of wheel bearings, the structure and principle of operation of individual parts can be fundamentally different.

Why does a wheel bearing fail?

The most common causes of bearing failure include:

  • Export

The most natural cause of failure. The highest quality bearings can withstand up to 200 km of run, and the cheapest ones up to 000 km, but this, of course, also depends on the conditions in which they are operated.

  • Mechanical damage

Mechanical damage occurs during an accident or when the driver hits a wheel on something, such as a curb.

  • Incorrect bearing installation

Most often this happens when the bearing is replaced not by a press, but by other methods. Incorrect mounting can lead to corrosion of the bearings or to excessively high operating temperatures.

  • Incompatible bearing

This usually happens when the driver has chosen a cheap replacement that does not match the original part in size. The bearing should always be matched to the vehicle model, year and engine version.

Symptoms of wheel bearing failure

The main symptoms of bearing wear are unusual noises: humming, rubbing, metallic sounds, creaking, whining, buzzing and rattling. The most characteristic hum occurs when driving straight ahead; disappears when turning. To make sure it's a bearing problem, jack the car up and check the suspects for noise and play. If the suspect wheel makes noise and feels loose, the wheel bearing should be replaced immediately. Remember that bearings should be replaced in pairs on the same axle as they usually wear out at the same time.

How to choose new wheel bearings?

The bearing must be ideal for a specific car model, so be especially careful when buying and read the labels. You can get, among other things, a hub integrated with a bearing, brake discs integrated with a bearing, brake drums integrated with a bearing. The SKF VKBA 6556 wheel bearing set has an integrated ABS sensor that allows you to monitor the status of the ABS system. This is currently a popular solution, but such kits require maintenance, so the assembly of a new part should be entrusted to an experienced person.

Always rely on parts from trusted manufacturers such as the Swedish brand SKF. The company's catalog includes many types of bearings (for example, rolling bearings, in housings, plain bearings) and bearing devices. SKF is constantly researching and developing bearings and related components, so the driver can always count on a product that meets the highest standards for safer driving.

How to care for a wheel bearing?

Bearings must withstand harsh operating conditions, but there are a few things you can do to make them easier. Avoid aggressive driving on poor quality roads. Dynamic driving on bumpy roads puts even more stress on them and shortens their service life. Always adapt your driving style to the prevailing conditions. Also, avoid controlled skidding and aggressive driving with heavy side loads. The wheel bearings in your car will thank you.
