Dry fog. What it is?

Dry fog is nothing more than a commercial name. The vaporous substance released by a steam generator or a pre-prepared cassette is just a suspension of small aromatic drops. Even the reagent for steam generators is produced exclusively in liquid form.

Let's start by dividing dry fog into two types according to the method of its creation:

  • disposable dry fog cassettes that are self-sufficient and do not require special equipment for their use;
  • special reusable installations, the so-called steam generators (or foggers), which are powered by the mains and are filled with aromatic liquid.

Disposable dry fog cassettes are more commonly referred to as interior fresheners or air conditioner cleaners. Designed to clean the interior of the car and the radiator of the air conditioner from unpleasant odors, mold and mildew. However, the final principle of their operation and the set of active components do not differ much from the fog generated by the fogger. In a more traditional sense, dry fog is a vapor-like substance generated by a special device.

The steam generator fluid is a mixture of aromatic substances that, when heated, turn into steam. The principle of action of liquids for the formation of dry fog is high penetrating and adhesive power. Vapor particles are deposited in a thin layer on the surfaces of the upholstery, leather and interior plastic and replace the unpleasant odor molecules. After spraying the mist, the aromatic components gradually evaporate from the treated surfaces over a month or two and create a pleasant smell in the car interior.

Dry Fog Equipment

Equipment for generating dry fog is popularly called steam generators, smoke machines or foggers. Today, two steam generators are most widely used in Russia.

  1. Smoke car Involight FM900. Produced mainly in China. Works from a network of 220 volts. A cylindrical container with liquid smoke is installed in a metal case. A suction hose is lowered into the tank, which sucks in the concentrate with the help of a hydraulic pump and delivers it to the nozzle. The nozzle sprays liquid smoke inside a hot chamber heated by spirals. The liquid evaporates, turns into a dry mist and is ejected through the frontal nozzle. The pressure allows you to process surfaces at a distance of up to 1 meter from the end of the nozzle. This device costs an average of 5000 rubles.
  2. Burgess F-982 Thermo-Fogger. This fogger has become more widespread in Russia. Designed in the USA. It can work both from 110 and from 220 volts. It consists of a removable aluminum container for filling with liquid concentrate, a central module with an electrical circuit, a pump and a nozzle, as well as a nozzle in which the liquid is heated and dry fog is generated. Judging by the reviews, it is more convenient to use. The price reaches 20000 thousand rubles.

There are other, less common designs of steam generators. However, the principle of operation for all models is the same.

The concentrate liquid is taken from the tank and supplied to the nozzle under slight pressure. The nozzle sprays the liquid directly into the heated steam generator. The liquid turns into steam and is ejected through the central nozzle.

Service price

The price of dry fogging a car can vary quite a lot. Several factors affect the final cost of this service.

  1. processed volume. For example, it will cost less to process a small hatchback than a full-size SUV or minivan.
  2. The price of the liquid used. Aromatic liquids can vary quite a lot in price. There are inexpensive concentrates with a price of about 5 rubles for a 1000-liter canister. There are more expensive options, in which a single portion of liquid for treating cars with dry fog costs the same as a canister of cheap concentrate.
  3. The mark-up of the office, which is engaged in the processing of cars with dry fog.

On average in Russia, the price of one injection of dry fog into the salon fluctuates around 2000 rubles. The minimum is about 1000 rubles. The maximum cost of this service is not limited. There are cases when the owners of this business took 5000 rubles for supposedly “professional” processing with dry fog. Objectively, this price is too high.

Dry Fog Reviews

Over time (after the first hype subsided) it became clear that dry fog is not nearly as effective as it was originally advertised. First, we note the negative aspects of this method of removing unpleasant odors.

  1. Weak effectiveness in terms of combating unpleasant odors. The ability of dry fog to eliminate sharp, persistent unpleasant odors is low. This is noted by almost all car owners who have had experience in processing cars with dry fog. In most cases, the aroma of the used concentrate is simply added to the unpleasant odor, which creates a kind of mixture that is not always pleasant for a person to smell.
  2. The formation of an oily residue on all surfaces of the car, which often has to be manually wiped after processing. If dry fogs are well absorbed into the fabric upholstery, then they are simply deposited on the skin, plastic and glass with a layer of liquid.

  1. The appearance of stains on fabric and leather surfaces with improper processing. The direct direction of the steam jet on fabric surfaces for 5 seconds and from a short distance is guaranteed to leave a stain that is difficult to remove.

Of the positive aspects, almost all motorists note several facts: dry fog creates a persistent aroma that lasts for at least a month. Good at masking the smell of cigarette smoke. But if the source of the unpleasant odor is not eliminated, then dry fog will only add its aroma to the general background.
