Tesla Model S Performance vs. Porsche Taycan in Top Gear. Musk: What a shit! [video]

Top Gear compared the Tesla Model S Performance to the Porsche Taycan. The cars were found to belong to different groups, but Tesla's boss probably thought the comparison was unfair. And he pointed out the serious shortcomings of the program.

The episode begins with a 1/4 mile race between a Porsche Taycan and a Tesla Model S Performance. According to the manufacturer, Tesla shows better time at this distance, so it should win. And yet this Porsche reaches the finish line first... According to a later statement from Top Gear, there were five races and each time Porsche won, increasing the lead over and over again (source).

Aside from losing the race, the cars were judged fairly fairly, albeit with a slight preference for Porsche. In German electrics, almost everything seemed a deliberate decision by the engineers who decided to "sacrifice a little practicality for the sake of simulating the 911 internal combustion engine in an electric car."

However, fans of Elon Musk and Tesla faced serious race mishaps early in the film. In Porsche, Sport Plus mode and Launch Control have been activated, which means that the car has been prepared for the maximum possible acceleration.

Tesla, in turn, was NOT in Ludicrous + mode, that is, in the maximum performance mode that could be seen with instruments. More: the car has been put into range mode (Range Mode) which, as the Tesla boss himself explains, is the opposite of an aggressive driving mode (source).

In range mode, the vehicle tries to conserve power in order to increase range (source). Elon Musk took it as a gross oversight and suggested calling the show "Low Gear". (Polish: Niski Bieg), not “Top Gear” (Polish: Highest Bieg).

Admittedly, Tesla's manual in range mode mostly talks about running the air conditioning and seat heating - power is limited in this mode - and the pictures above don't have to be taken during an actual 1/4 mile race, but such flaws undermine the credibility of the entire film.

About it The Top Gear editor is not fully familiar with the electric car segment. his remark about wires (about 9:15) also testifies. The vibrations he felt in the cable connected to the Porsche were not electricity, but liquid cooling the plug. Moments later, he also confessed that when he talked about the large amount of space in the back of the Taycan, he was overwhelmed with emotion ...
