Tesla Model X and Ford Explorer pull trailers. Which car is more fuel efficient and what are the ranges?

The All Electric Family channel tested the Tesla Model X and Ford Explorer ST for trailer towing capability. It turned out that both cars consume about three times more fuel / energy than driving without a trailer. But their range is significantly different - Ford will be able to cover twice the distance in one gas station than the Tesla Model X.

Let's start by comparing prices. There is no Ford Explorer ST in the Polish configurator, and the Ford Explorer ST Line issued by it costs from 372 PLN. The comparison further violates the fact that the model on offer in Poland is a plug-in hybrid, while the normal Ford Explorer ST is a conventional combustion car with a 6-liter V3 engine and 298 kW (405 hp). Thus, we can only estimate that the price of Explorer ST in Poland will be about 350-400 thousand PLN.

Tesla Model X it's not much more expensive. Long Range Plus version starts from 412 490 PLN... The vehicle is equipped with two 193 kW (262 hp) engines, one per axle.

During the test, Ford Explorer clearly won in the speed of refueling, which took only a few minutes. Tesla took more than 20 minutes to charge, and using the Supercharger required unhitching the trailer. The cost of this operation turned out to be Tesla's advantage - the owner took the money for free. Tesla also praised the driving stability, while the Ford was "weird" because it made engine noise and did not recover energy during deceleration (recovery).

At the same distance of about 55 kilometers at a speed of 96,6 km / h (60 mph), the cars required:

  • Ford Explorer - 12,5 liters of gasoline, which is translated burning with a trailer component 22,4 l / 100 km,
  • Tesla Model X – 29,8 kWh of energy, which is in terms of energy consumption with trailer component 53,7 kWh / 100 km.

Based on this, we can easily calculate automotive ranges:

  • Ford Explorer – the car must move with a tank capacity of 76,5 liters. to 341 kilometers at one gas station,
  • Tesla Model X - with a battery with a capacity of 92 (102) kWh, the car should beat to 171 kilometers on one charge.

This is how it looks mileage of an electric vehicle with a trailer approximately half the mileage of a combustion engine car of the same size with the same trailer. Even if we take into account minor errors in calculations and permitted speed with a trailer in Poland (maximum 80 km / h), it should be assumed that electric vehicles will offer similar driving parameters with a trailer with batteries with a capacity of 180-200 kWh.
