Test: Audi A6 50 TDI Quattro Sport

The modern approach to design in the automotive industry is, of course, well known: you try to fit the same parts and assemblies into as many different models as possible. They really have this approach to all three German premium brands. After Mercedes-Benz introduced very technologically advanced and useful systems in its S-Class, they were quickly ported to all smaller cars, E, C and off-road derivatives. The way BMW extended the offer was similar. First "week", then others. So it is with Audi. Since we got to know the new A8 a year ago, all technological advances have gone even further. Here too, almost everything from the Osmica was used in the A7, now also in the A6. If we know that the first generation A7 was actually just a slightly redesigned A6, we must remember that the current A6 is no longer the one that will be used to process the A7. Including because it was presented earlier. But also because now we have very few common features of the body. The new chief designer Mark Lichte has really worked with his colleagues, each of the new products is now unique (in addition to all three mentioned limousines, there are three more SUVs: Q8, Q3 and e-Tron). When we look at the new Audi only briefly, the design differences are not as noticeable, but a closer look confirms the previously described claim that Audi is now designed so that we can distinguish between them, of course, as is the A6.

Now it looks much more stylish than its predecessor. It is slightly longer, but in fact the owners of the current one will not have to change the garage for a new one, since it is 2,1 centimeters! The width has not changed, but the size of the mirrors will definitely please those who drive a lot on Austrian or German roads. With a width of 2,21 meters, they often have to drive in narrow lanes at work sites, as this measure prohibits overtaking! Speaking about the shape and other ease of use of the case, this is also the only inconvenience. The test car's elegance was underscored by the Sport lettering package and large 21-inch wheels. Not quite in this regard, lighting equipment should be mentioned - LED technology has replaced outdated technology. However, this is best noticed by the driver when driving at night. LED dot-matrix headlights illuminate the entire road in front of the vehicle, and if necessary, the system darkens those areas where too much light could interfere with traffic ahead or come from the opposite direction. In any case, this equipment should be selected from the list of accessories!

At the start of sales of the new A6, only the 50 TDI version was (was) available (the label replaced the previous 3.0 V6 TDI). The engine, which in the old version of the Volkswagen Group caused the most problems due to emissions fraud, is now the first in Audi to be cleaned up and meet the new standards. According to him, the meticulous German Auto Motor und Sport analyzed the emissions in a special driving test and found that everything met the expected requirements. The results of our own testing method cannot be served, so we must rely on the German ones. However, the engine, along with the eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, made up the most controversial part of our test. No, there was nothing wrong! From now on, only the driver and the buyer will have to get used to the rather belated reaction to commands given by the engine-transmission combination by pressing the accelerator pedal. When we start, at first we hear only increased noise from under the hood, but after a short "time to think" the expected happens - we start. This only happens after the torque converter has done its job of smoothly transferring engine torque to the gearbox. Often, even while driving when we want to accelerate quickly, we still encounter this role of torque converter "intervention". The author of this article explains this uncoordinated novelty in his own way: most of the emissions (including fuel consumption) in the engine occur during fast acceleration, so this intervention ensures that now the Audi Six will also be politically correct. We've already seen this phenomenon with the A7 and I'm pretty sure we'll see it with a lot of new products from other brands!

However, when a powerful enough engine propels around 1,8 tons of weight, the A6 is great. The ride comfort is quite convincing (preferably in the “economy” position, but you can also customize everything to your liking). If necessary, by choosing any other driving mode, we can add beauty to the characteristics of a real little beast, and with the A6 we drive in softer or sharper turns with almost no restrictions (except for those provided by the rules of the road, of course). All-wheel drive, air suspension, large wheels (255/35 R21) and a fairly straight steering gear make this possible.

However, it looks like those looking for sophistication and comfort will opt for the A6. This further enhances the interior feel. Here we also find some sporty accents (such as the seats and the S-line sports package). However, the many pleasures of a perfectly designed driver's work environment immediately imply comfort and relaxation while driving. Of course, Audi has taken (shall we say) the digital route. So for the big center screen, which, depending on the driver's taste, allows us to choose smaller or larger sensors and various content additions around them. The case is completely transparent, but for those who appreciate projecting critical driving data onto the windshield, this does not mean compensation ... In the middle of the dashboard of the A6 (like both with the higher numbers) we find two touchscreens. The screen below seems especially fresh and useful in today's offering of different driving modes, where we can also write a destination on it (but of course we take our eyes off the road).

Audi safety assistants make sure that nothing serious happens at such events. Audi claims that the A6 is already capable of Level 6 autonomous driving. If that means it can follow the lane even into corners, the A6 is something of a rookie who is just learning it (this remark comes in as a warning to optimists who would like to crash into traffic with almost no hands). The A6 knows a lot, but corner tracking is just the beginning, but if you can afford this way of riding long distances, be prepared for your wrists to ache at the end of the ride due to constant directional adjustments. It shows much less jitters in normal driving when the tracking accessory is not enabled. Of course, the AXNUMX can drive and stop (autonomously) at a slower pace in convoys when the driver doesn't have to do anything (except those who cover too short safe distances).

The A6 is in many ways the most modern car currently available. I consider this a modern touch system that allows you to control almost all functions through two screens, whoever knows any of the available languages will cope with voice commands. They also include the option of several hundred different additional settings as desired, various preset assistants (safety and comfort), mild hybrid technology (48 volts) with the ability to stop the engine and regenerate braking energy, selectable driving modes or active LED Headlights.

The more generously we choose accessories from a long list, the more the price increases. The A6 we tested can also serve as an example. From the starting price of a good 70 thousand, the price jumps to the final price of just under 100 thousand. In fact, we get two cars for this addition. But this is definitely the wrong way to look at everything. The end result is a convincing car with an even more convincing impression. The choice of vehicle options is limitless.

Overall rating (510/600)

  • Now, to Audi's reputation in the Šestica, adult design has been added: the new generation is slightly larger in every respect than the previous one, but also very similar to the larger A8 or the sportier A7.

  • Cab and trunk (100/110)

The A6 is very close to the larger A8 in many ways, even in terms of elegance.

  • Comfort (105

    / 115)

Passengers are taken care of in all respects, and the driver also feels the best.

  • Transmission (62

    / 80)

Powerful and economical enough, but the driver needs patience when starting unusually slow.

  • Driving performance (89

    / 100)

Sufficiently maneuverable, even transparent, with four-wheel drive and properly equipped steering wheel, in short, a good base

  • Security (102/115)

In all respects, just below the top

  • Economy and environment (52

    / 80)

A big and heavy car might not be that small for the environment, but the A6 is economical enough that we can't really blame it. But we still have to spend a lot of money on it

Driving pleasure: 4/5

  • Judging by the simple comfort from long trips, it would have earned even five.

We praise and reproach

almost no noise in the cabin

autonomous driving in columns

fuel consumption (by dimensions and weight)

comfort with air suspension

three large screens for driver control and information

efficient headlights

inconsistency when starting off and sharp acceleration

high price
