Test: Hyundai i20 1.4 Premium

For the second generation of the i20, Hyundai has returned to an established approach from a few years ago of offering a vehicle that outperforms competitors in many ways. The previous i20 didn't live up to that in any way, and the new one is moving steadily to the surprise of buyers. Leaving design aside at first and focusing on the passenger compartment, this is the most important part of the change. Designers and engineers have tried to make the appearance of the cabin unexpected - getting into it, you get the feeling that you are sitting in a car of a higher class. This is facilitated by the feeling of spaciousness in the front seats, as well as the good appearance of the dashboard and the materials from which it is made. In addition, the rich equipment convinces in a certain sense, especially the one dedicated to the Premium label.

In addition, our i20 got a panoramic roof, which reduced headroom by an inch (but it did not affect the feeling of spaciousness). In addition, he impressed with the winter package of services on winter days (how original, right?). This includes heated front seats and a steering wheel. Both options make the beginning of the trip on winter days definitely more comfortable. Observing and describing the exterior, it is difficult to say that the new i20 is the successor of the old one. Adequate visibility is provided by the more mature and serious features of the new i20 with a different mask and standard LED lights (for vehicle and daytime running lights starting with Style equipment) and a black lacquered C-pillar that creates side visibility. the windows face the rear of the vehicle.

The rear lights are also successful and unusually large for this class of cars. The color also attracted attention, but we believe that it will not be one of the most popular in the Slovenian market, although it fits well with this Hyundai! The exterior is definitely believed to give the impression that it is a bigger car than it really is. During the first test, we were slightly less satisfied with the engine. The most powerful gasoline engine chosen is otherwise powerful enough to provide both good acceleration and ample flexibility.

This is less convincing with the economy, because in fact, even when we really pay attention to the gentle pressing of the accelerator pedal and try to get the fuel to pass through the injectors as little as possible, it does not deserve attention. The test on our standard i20 lap was satisfactory and the result does not deviate from the normal consumption (5,9 versus 5,5), but this is probably slightly higher, also due to the winter tires that were on our i20. It is also worrying that you have to press harder on the throttle to start. Since the six-speed manual transmission doesn't convince with leverage precision either, that's not entirely convincing about the i20's drivetrain.

But there are still a few more options for customers, as Hyundai also offers even smaller petrol and two turbodiesels in the i20, especially the latter, which are probably more recommended in terms of economy and fuel consumption. The new i20 also features a slightly longer wheelbase, which now translates into both its secure roadholding and the achievement of a more comfortable ride. The plus is that passengers feel comfortable in it almost all the time while driving, a little more discomfort is caused only by really wrinkled or embossed surfaces. To this must be added the feeling that the car is better taken so that the noise does not penetrate into the interior.

To avoid problems when cornering too fast, ESP intervenes quickly enough to curb riders' over-ambition or correct the mistakes of regular drivers. The comfort and flexibility of the passenger compartment are commendable. The luggage compartment is also within the limits of what classmates offer, but it is not the largest. In the more equipped versions, there is also a double bottom in the equipment, which allows us to obtain an even cargo space when the rear seat backs are turned over.

As for the front seats, in addition to the spaciousness, it should also be emphasized that the seat is quite long and comfortable. Rear space is also appropriate. The good side of the new i20 is, above all, rich equipment. In terms of comfort, we can say that the basic equipment (Life) already contains a lot, and our tested Hyundai is called Premium, which means the richest equipment (and a price increase of about 2.500 euros). Automatic air conditioning, leather steering wheel with control buttons, CD and MP3 radio with USB and iPod connection with Bluetooth connectivity, smartphone holder, rain sensor, automatic headlight sensor, double boot floor and sensors with The LCD screen in the middle gives the impression that we are driving a car of a much higher class. Hyundai has been less generous with safety accessories. Passive standard, with front and side airbags and side curtains.

However, we missed (albeit at an additional cost) an electronic device that would brake automatically to prevent minor collisions (which will probably also lower the EuroNCAP score). However, we didn't like some of the little things in use. Most of the undersigned were outraged by the handling of the car key. If you have thumbs up too often, when you insert the key into the ignition, you will encounter a button that automatically locks the car, so the key design seems to be unergonomic. And another surprise awaits us when listening to slightly more distant radio stations, the connection between the radio and the antenna has no selectivity, and as a result, reception interference or even automatic switching to another station occurs.

A good solution would be a smartphone holder in the middle above the dashboard. For those who want to use phone navigation, this is the right solution. Also commendable is the menu search on the infotainment system, it also has the ability to voice commands, as well as to look up addresses or names in the phone book via Bluetooth. The new i20 is a good choice for those looking for a well-equipped and reasonably spacious small four-meter family car, especially since it's also very reasonably available.

Overall rating (314/420)

  • Hyundai has managed to seriously update the current model, which will especially appeal to those looking for a lot of equipment, good comfort at a good price.

  • Exterior (14/15)

Hyundai's new design line is different, but perfectly acceptable.

  • Interior (97/140)

Especially for the driver and passenger, the new i20 offers a lot of good, the front end is spacious, comfortable, even with acceptable ergonomics.

  • Engine, transmission (45

    / 40)

The least convincing part of a car is the connection between the engine and gearbox. We miss a better economy.

  • Driving performance (58

    / 95)

The position on the road is solid, and the comfort even on poor road surfaces is satisfactory.

  • Performance (22/35)

In terms of power, the engine is still convincing.

  • Security (34/45)

A fairly wide range of passive safety accessories already in the basic version.

  • Economy (44/50)

Hyundai still promises a more modern engine, the current most powerful one, of course, does not allow for too economical driving. The five year warranty is excellent.
