Usually at forty we solve the housing problem (and borrow for the next forty years, but leave the details), stop burdening ourselves with a liquid partner (partner) and let the children play on their own in front of the block or house, without which you have to spend whole days in the sandbox or listen bored grandmothers in the park. Perhaps the most important thing, or at least very important thing for a person, is to turn from an apprentice into an experienced master. At least that's how it should be, they say.

In Hyundai, they are now in their forties. Let's forget the awkward puberty of the Sonata, because the i40 is a completely different car. Much, but actually much better, nicer and even more useful. The i40 was first offered in Europe in a family suit (CW) and the sedan will only be shown at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

But we can already tell that the Hyundai center in Rüsselsheim has done a great job, as the new i40 CW embodies dynamism, beauty and…yes, even a touch of prestige. At least with the most equipped version that we tested, and it came to us from distant Norway. Pleasantly styled daytime running lights, trackable xenon headlights, a smart key, a three-piece sunshade window, a parking assist camera, and of course, front and rear parking sensors, there's more than the outside would like. But you get used to all this very quickly, you really get used to it. A power tailgate that slowly opens the 553-litre boot adds a touch of exclusivity to leave even perpetually noisy (and smart) friends speechless. This is the latest Hyundai, and it looks very good - even live.

If you think that Koreans have forgotten about the interior in their desire to present a novelty as soon as possible, then you are mistaken. Recall that the i40 is based on the Genus concept, which they showed back in 2006 in Geneva, so there is more than enough time for thorough preparation. According to our measurements, there is a lot of space inside, especially for the front passengers.

Compared to the new Passat Variant, there are more inches up front and slightly fewer in the back seat and in the trunk. Upon entry, the electrically adjustable seat retracts to facilitate passage of the heated steering wheel, and the instrument panel plays a pleasant tune. Cool, young people would say.

I drove the first meters by car, turning off our office garage when we had to land from the third basement on the road in the center of Ljubljana, a few square meters away. This ride also includes bumps that virtuous architects and engineers have left to challenge drivers and their vehicles. But those big bumps are a great indicator of body twist strength, as they have to be driven at an angle, which is - as you probably know - a real poison for the body. The Hyundai i40 didn't quite perform in this exercise, although you won't feel the difference in normal driving. The Passat, for example, didn't complain at all about the twisting or slight creaking that we noticed on the i40.

Unfortunately, Hyundai didn't do a good job with the seats either. The front ones are electrically adjustable, in our case even leather ones, with additional heating and cooling, with an adjustable lumbar, not to mention additional heating and an adjustable backrest. However, they are too high and not well formed on the European buttocks to be credited with anything more than just an average rating. It's not uncomfortable, but it's not class-leading either, and most importantly, with my 180 inches, I was already uncomfortably close to the bottom of the roof. In the Veloster, for example, I sat better, but it's a sports car. Otherwise, we have to praise the rest of the ergonomics (yes, the accelerator pedal is attached to the heel according to BMW) as well as the storage space, we listed quite a few.

The shape of the dashboard is impressive, we only confirm that the interior is very pleasant, despite the higher position. Probably a lot of light or airiness (already mentioned a dormer window), an Infinity sound system, navigation, automatic air conditioning (although it used to blow from the top vents, we didn't want that), a speakerphone system (with voice recognition!) ...

Even more enjoyable was the discovery of electronic systems to help drive the car. ESP stability control, start assist and cruise control or speed limiter are a must, so to speak, and then we indulged in an unplanned lane change and (semi) automatic parking. The driver simply turns on the program (between the front seats) and drives slowly along the cars parked longitudinally, so that the system detects a large enough space. Then lower the steering wheel and simply follow the instructions on the dashboard (the accelerator pedal and brake pedal must still be operated by the driver) to bring the car to your chosen parking spot just like you would with a professional driver. The system works really well, and only very experienced drivers will find that only with the help of parking sensors and a rear view camera, it is much more efficient to squeeze a 4,77 meter long car into a smaller hole in the classic way, as basic requirements for starting the engine. maneuver for safety above. However, the system does not work in transverse parking spaces. However, Hyundai has stocked this i40 well, so the price is expected to be higher. The only black dot on all electronic devices was marked by a camera that failed twice due to poor contact. Otherwise, it is a flawless product.

Hyundai expects the 1,7-liter turbodiesel engine to be the best-selling engine in Europe. The bike is enjoyable, perhaps not the quietest, but still sleek, resilient, and economical enough to be a pleasant companion for everyday tasks. In town and on country roads, it works great with the six-speed automatic transmission, which weighs just 78 kilograms (20 more than the manual!) Is a domestic product of the Hyundai-Kia plant that they can be proud of. ...

Shifting is always quick and smooth, not like the Volkswagen DSG, but still efficient enough to lift a finger to buy. A car equipped in this way will only choke on a sharp acceleration on the motorway, when, after accelerating the truck, you accelerate to, say, 150 km / h; then the engine is already on the verge of shortness of breath, so we recommend that very demanding drivers check the two-liter version of the CRDi with as much as 130 kilowatts and more domestic 177 "horses". At the Auto store we can't wait to test this version, but we will not advocate a longer test.

With an automatic transmission, just forget about the sports program; shifting is not faster, the electronics only insists on one gear for a longer time, which is unpleasant and even more sporty. I am giving the designers and engineers a big black dot at Hyundai because of the two levers on the steering wheel that we can use to shift gears “manually”. The products are too plastic, and they get too stuck in the work, to be pleasant or even pleasant to work with. Shment, couldn't they just copy the Volkswagen system?

Curvature on main roads will also be enjoyable thanks to the new speed-dependent electric power steering. Sometimes, on the bumpy road to the passenger compartment, too much noise was heard from under the wheels, as well as an ugly hump, ugly creeping up to the driver's hands. You won't experience it on the Ford Mondeo. The chassis is, however, comfortable enough that McPherson struts in the front and multi-link rear will be more praise than criticism. Personally, I would have preferred better power steering and less body twisting than the audio pickup and removal of the driver's seat, but even this Hyundai i40 was a pleasant companion. And I admit that I was very sorry when I returned it to the agent fourteen days later. Despite the mistakes, which are few and only bothers pickpockets.

The i40 may not have the Mondeo sports power steering and Passat powertrain yet, but it already has Italian beauty and Japanese build quality. What if we say Hyundai is pleasant, comfortable and enjoyable? European competitors may already be shaking, because the new Hyundai models have already grown from a student to a teacher who can teach a lot.

The complete revival of Hyundai is truly something amazing. Ten years ago, we Koreans were completely written off because of the crisis by nationalizing the debts of their car industry, and then they started behaving completely differently. So the i40 is a serious proposition for the upper middle class. It's true that it's hard to find something that really stands out from the competition, but overall it's so well designed that you won't even find any specific flaws.

Appearance is what attracts everyone's attention. Comfort and driving position have also risen to a much higher level, and this is especially true of the equipment offer.

Unfortunately, we do not yet know what the price will be on the Slovenian market and whether the gift will be tested with all the equipment from the Slovenian offer, because the official start of sales will be in 14 days. Judging by the proposals from other Hyundais, the i40 is doing quite well in this regard.

Overall rating (339/420)

  • Hyundai continues its successful journey with the i40 from the ix35 and will apparently continue with the i30 (see News). To say that he is beautiful and cuddly does not mean that he is also perfect. But remember the Sonata and you will see that progress is really obvious!

  • Exterior (14/15)

Beautiful, harmonious and dynamic. Well done, Hyundai!

  • Interior (102/140)

Large enough to accommodate the entire family, and superbly equipped and built.

  • Engine, transmission (53

    / 40)

We had comments on the steering wheel and engine under full load, but otherwise a good gearbox and predictable chassis.

  • Driving performance (58

    / 95)

Good pedals, bad gear levers on the steering wheel, good braking feel and directional stability.

  • Performance (24/35)

Enough for everyone and too much for the police if the driver is not careful. We are waiting for the two-liter CDTi!

  • Security (41/45)

Seven airbags, ESP, camera, active xenon headlights, lane keep assist, etc.

  • Economy (47/50)

Moderate fuel consumption (some competitors have better!), Good warranty, expected average loss in value.
