Test: Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRDi 4WD Style

The question of what is generally available is always difficult to answer when buying a car. The choice is wide, but the more you choose, the more options you will see. The same goes for SUVs, which were already very popular with Slovenian buyers, mainly due to the well-known motto “More cars for your money”. In Santa Fe, you will definitely get a great car - in terms of size and roominess.

The car has a length of almost 4,7 meters and a height of almost 1,7 meters. Since Hyundai will install a third bench seat in the same body in the spring, there is indeed plenty of space in this version with two rows of seats that are also properly used. My favorite is the movable rear bench, which allows us to adjust the space behind the driver to carry passengers or more luggage. The comfort of the seats in the Santa Fe should also be noted - the two front ones really fit and praise big or small, heavy or light passengers. The same goes for the flexibility of the driving position.

In any case, Hyundai's designers and engineers have gone to great lengths to make the Santa Fe user feel good while sitting in the car. True, the interior (in the tested version) does not have any special veneer or leather decorations. However, the plastics used have a fairly high-quality appearance, and the assembly accuracy is also high. In fact, it is exactly the same quality that we have come to expect from this brand over the past few years.

In this well-known Hyundai style there is also an exterior similar to other newer cars of this brand, and a mask decorated with chrome strips, which gives the car a touch of nobility, makes a good impression.

The Style equipment that our test model was equipped with contains many things, but it is also true that there are three more in Santa Fe with much more noble accessories. But in safety equipment, you'll find pretty much everything they offer: front airbags for the driver and passenger, side airbags, and knee airbags for the driver. The active bonnet provides better safety in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. ABS, brake booster, downhill assist, ESP with anti-roll bar and trailer stabilization system are the main electronic aids. You will be looking in vain for all those modern systems that are now offered in cars of other brands, not just premium ones. There is also no collision avoidance system.

The same goes for field support. All the Santa Fe offers is all-wheel drive, a standard addition is a central differential lock that locks the power transfer between the two drive axles at a 50:50 ratio, rather than efficiently conquering hills and ditches. In the end, its structure is such that it is rare to drive along narrow (width!) Cart tracks with it. However, it will serve well for those who are trying to overcome the snow on a full drive or attach a heavier load to the hitch.

The commendable part of the Santa Fe is definitely the 2,2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. It's strong enough to make a car that weighs nearly two tons feel pretty jumpy, and plenty of torque is available even at low revs so it doesn't need to be ridden at high revs to drive normally. So the agility is quite exemplary, and the six-speed transmission is solid, but with one limitation - it does not tolerate quick movements of the gear lever.

Thus, Santa Fe offers us a lot if our desires are related to the basic need for transportation from one to the other and the desire for adequate comfort and engine power at a fairly reasonable price. Those looking for more (especially in terms of safety accessories, prestige and more compelling four-wheel drive capabilities) will have to open their wallet a lot more. Maybe he'll get two Santa Fe for something so demanding ...

EYE TO EYE

Sasha Kapetanovich

Since this is a column in which we express personal opinions, I can easily write down my impression of the form: it is beautiful. Inside, it is a little thin, but in terms of ergonomics, the product is perfect. It rides smoothly, which is nice, unless our daily routine goes through Vršić. It's hard for me to blame the gearbox, but I would still prefer to take the automatic, and my right hand would be on the steering wheel. But what if "automation" is four thousand more expensive - mainly due to higher taxes due to higher emissions.

Overall rating (341/420)

  • The Santa Fe is an SUV between two worlds, premium in many respects and mediocre in others. But it's also true: whoever doesn't use it in the field doesn't need an SUV anymore!

  • Exterior (13/15)

Hyundai's new styling, big but convincing.

  • Interior (99/140)

Spacious and comfortable, with a large trunk, movable and folding rear seat, comfortable front seats.

  • Engine, transmission (50

    / 40)

Convincing and not too thirsty four-cylinder, with unpretentious all-wheel drive, "slow" transmission.

  • Driving performance (60

    / 95)

Strong road holding, slightly stiff suspension (especially on potholed roads), good braking feel, but longer braking distances (winter tires).

  • Performance (29/35)

Powerful enough engine, solid acceleration, good maneuverability.

  • Security (37/45)

Security at a fairly high level, many electronic gadgets.

  • Economy (53/50)

At moderate speeds, consumption can also be surprisingly low, with the three-year, five-year warranty being a big advantage.
