Test: Kia Stinger 2.2 CRDi RWD GT Line

Again, I can use the catchphrase that Kia is no longer just a Korean brand. Firstly, not because many non-Koreans work in it, but in top positions (including the designer Peter Schreier), and secondly, not because Koreans already realize that they do not want a world (and spoiled, European) fame with Korean models or models. the same models as in their country.

In Europe, we still look rather askance at brands that are not known in our country. And it is not at all necessary to talk about non-European brands. After all, the Czech Škoda had to go through something similar in the struggle for European buyers. While the latter is a fairly equal competitor in the automotive industry in most European markets, some in Slovenia still look at it from the outside. Things are even worse for Korean brands. They have been present in our markets for many years, but some still strongly avoid them.

They may be right, they may be afraid of what their neighbors will think of them, or they may simply not allow themselves to open a box of surprises.

As already mentioned, Stinger Kiji belongs to it. I can easily write that the Stinger is the best Kia they have ever made. However, this conclusion is by no means one-sided or shaky. Reliability and reliability are provided only by those who signed the Stinger project. If world-famous designer Peter Schreyer is not a sufficient guarantee, it is worth mentioning another German expert - Albert Biermann, who has worked at German BMW for more than three decades. Taking care of the chassis and driving dynamics is just an added bonus.

Especially if we know that Koreans want to attack with Stinger where they weren't before. In the class of sports limousines, they are not afraid of anyone, even the most famous German representatives. And if we look under the hood of a Stinger with a powerful gasoline engine, many will shrug their shoulders. 345 "horses", four-wheel drive and a bunch of security systems for less than 60 thousand euros. Judging by the numbers, this will definitely be a good buy, of course, for someone who is not burdened with prejudice. Not with Koreans.

Another song is a Stinger with a diesel engine. You can't really blame him, but in order to buy such a car, you must, no doubt, have a completely sober head. The test car cost as much as 49.990 euros, which is definitely a lot of money. But here at Kia, they can't play the cards for power, driving dynamics and over-competitiveness. However, there must be a line drawn somewhere where one can cross for any reason. I still defend the fact that the Stinger is a very good car, but on the other hand, for example, an Alfa Romeo Giulia or even an Audi A5 can be priced next to it. Different design approaches, the same power, premium class in the first emotional depravity, and in the latest German perfection. Kia Stinger is nothing to look for in parallel.

This, of course, does not mean that the Stinger is a bad car. Not at all, especially if I wrote before that this is the best Kia. That's true, but I'm also a little biased about showing off, mainly because I've driven those gas-powered Stingers before. And some good, some good above average things remain in the subconscious, whether you like it or not. So even on a diesel Stinger it’s hard for me to fully get used to it.

But then again - even in terms of diesel the Stinger is the right car, and anyone who doesn't mind the price will surely get a good car. Or else - if someone told me that this would be my company car for the next month, the next three months, or the whole year, I would be more happy than dissatisfied.

After all, the Stinger offers plenty of space, good location and excellent driving dynamics, as well as a pleasant shape. The interior is also pleasant and ergonomic, but some details are still alarming or not at the level of competitors. If the car costs 50 thousand euros, we have every right to compare it with the same (expensive) competitors. However, it is worthwhile to be fair and point out the main culprit that this car does not cost more than 45 thousand euros. This is, of course, the GT-Line equipment set, which is so rich that we could only list the equipment instead of this article, but the question will be whether there is enough space at all.

The position of the car is secure, and the chassis is not afraid of even faster driving on a winding road. Obviously, its boiler is equipped with a 2,2-liter turbodiesel engine that offers 200 "horsepower" and 440 Newton meters of torque. A study of the technical data shows that the Stinger accelerates from standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in just over seven seconds, and the maximum speed exceeds the average of 230 kilometers per hour - which is enough for everyday use. In this case, we should pay tribute to the masters involved in the sound of the engine. Especially in the sporty driving position chosen, the engine does not make the typical diesel sound, and at times one might even think that there is no diesel engine under the front cover. Even in normal driving, the engine is not overly loud, but certainly not on par with some of the competition.

But these are quite pleasant concerns that will not bother many drivers. If he can afford the price, he will know what he will get and is much more likely to be pleased with the purchase than not.

In any case, it should be emphasized once again that the Korean Kia is also entering the car market. Also at Stinger's expense!

Overall rating (433/600)

  • Given the class of cars Stinger was leading in, being the best Kia to date doesn't help him much. The competition is fierce and above average quality is needed to be successful.

  • Cab and trunk (85/110)

Undoubtedly the best Kia to date. The cabin feels good too, but the Korean heritage cannot be ignored.

  • Comfort (88

    / 115)

Since the designers did this with sports cars in mind, some will lack comfort, but overall it's completely satisfying.

  • Transmission (59

    / 80)

Compared to competitors, average, but for Kia the best so far

  • Driving performance (81

    / 100)

The champion is its powerful gasoline sibling, but even with the Stinger diesel engine it doesn't fly. He has a little rear-wheel drive problem on a snowy road.

  • Security (85/115)

Like everyone else, Stinger has no security issues. This was also confirmed by the EuroNCAP test.

  • Economy and environment (35

    / 80)

Otherwise, anyone who can afford it will get a nice but expensive car. Given the perceived loss in value, the Stinger is a fairly expensive choice.

Driving pleasure: 3/5

  • Above average compared to Kio and average compared to competitors and diesel engine
