Short test: Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI (103 kW) Bluemotion Technology Highline

Every time a Passat enters the market, it has a big advantage over the competition. And not because he would have stood out in every way, but because of all the prejudices that have accumulated since the days when competition was really weak. And this time, the tested sample became a kind of template for drawing the ideal business limousine. A new more serious, sharpened, sleek look with lots of beauties, chrome accessories and LEDs for visibility. The big 18-inch wheels with wide tires are also a highlight of the overall look, which significantly undermines the Bluemotion ideology (a set of solutions to reduce fuel consumption).

The interior as a whole has undergone fewer changes compared to its predecessor. Aluminum trim, analogue clocks and softer plastics are meant to convey the exterior of a serious sedan to the feel on the inside. The ergonomics and seat are hard to blame, there is only discomfort when shifting gears as the clutch has to be pushed all the way to the front wheel for the clutch to be fully depressed. However, in order to put the Passat ahead of all competitors without controversy, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the list of additional equipment. Here we find some technological solutions that are either new to the market or simply do not offer them in the competition. Thus, the test Passat was equipped with various aids such as emergency braking, active cruise control, lane departure assistance, parking assistance ... In short, a set of technologically advanced solutions that work for well-being and road safety. But right here at Volkswagen, they fell asleep a little and forgot to establish a Bluetooth connection, which in our opinion is ahead of all the aforementioned high-tech tools in terms of usability and impact on driving safety. Although we, like all other journalist colleagues, have repeatedly pointed out this shortcoming, bluetooth is still not included in the standard package (even in the Highline package).

The 103kW turbodiesel is a proven machine that really doesn't need to be wasted. Even improvements under the general name of Bluemotion Technology, which help to reduce fuel consumption, are not new to the market. If you, as a director of the company, gave your commercial passenger such a motorized Passat, he will definitely have nothing to complain about. But if you want to reward him or motivate him even more, treat him to a 125kW machine paired with a DSG gearbox.

So is this Passat Bluemotion a smart choice? Definitely. In general, it's hard to blame him. You just need to choose the right technique that will satisfy your individuality. It is definitely worth considering buying some additional services that put the Passat ahead of the competition. But first, treat him to what all competitors already have. Let's say bluetooth.
