Test: Mercedes-Benz class B 180 d // Family solution

Many people think that family cars are not a premium brand, but the sales numbers certainly suggest otherwise. The previous B class was a bestseller, nothing else applies to the Series 2 Active Tourer rival. Therefore, the new class B is a logical continuation of its predecessor. They tried to keep everything good and replace everything bad. It was somehow, it doesn't even matter, it is important that the B-class is now much more popular in terms of design. If we know that more than 15 million customers have chosen their predecessor in less than 1,5 years, the newcomer has a bright future ahead. Mainly because the new B-Class also maintains an affordable base car price.

To be clear, the B-Class is also a Mercedes. And since stars aren't cheap, we can't write class B to be cheap. Well, he doesn't want to, and in the end it's just what you need. But even a quick look at the price list of Mercedes models shows that history repeats itself. Namely, the predecessor was already available in home models, but now it's again less than a thousandth more expensive than the smaller A-Class. And if we know that the A-Class is actually the ticket to the world of Mercedes cars, the B-Class is once again the best buy for many people.

Of course, it is important to consider what we will use the car for - to transport two people or a family. In class A, everything is mainly subordinated to the driver and passenger, in class B the rear passengers are also taken care of. The test car has not yet been equipped with a movable rear bench, but when it is available, the B-Class will be really practical.

Of course, the number of passengers in a car affects the choice of engine. The more there are, the more load the engine bears. And if we add their potential baggage, Test B may already have minor problems. It was equipped with a 1,5-liter turbodiesel engine producing 116 "horsepower". Sthe engine itself is quite decent and of course you have to swallow that there are no Mercedesbut with the addition of passengers, its convenience and flexibility becomes more and more limited. There is no problem with carrying two people, if you are carrying most of the time with the whole family, it might be a good idea to choose a more powerful engine.

In any case, I admit that for many, the engine is not the most important thing. It is important for him that the car moves, and even more so that it offers. And Class B has a lot to offer. Just like Test B was generous. A quick glance at the price list shows that additional equipment was installed in the amount of more than EUR 20.000, which means that there was almost additional equipment for almost one machine. On the other hand, this is unacceptable for many, but it should be borne in mind that now the buyer can equip small cars with luxury technology, which was previously reserved only for larger and more expensive models. And I mean not only the designer chocolates (panoramic sunroof, AMG Line package, 19-inch AMG wheels), but also those that keep track of driver errors, such as various assisted safety systems, advanced MBUX functions (digital sensor and center screen in one), great LED headlights and ultimately a state-of-the-art camera to assist when reversing and parking.

When we add all the aforementioned goodies below the line, the total rises dramatically. But don't worry, even without these goodies, the B-Class is still a great car. After all, the AMG package makes the car lower, which is not good for many. Also 19 '' wheels require low profile tires, therefore, "goodbye, sidewalks", which, again, will not particularly appeal to the fairer sex. Not everyone likes the glass roof, and if you subtract just the above, the price of the car will be more than six thousand euros lower.

More importantly, B can be equipped (like a test car) with a premium display. MBUX, numerous auxiliary safety systems and, finally, smart cruise control that can automatically stop the car. These are candy worth paying extra for, but it's true that they cost money. Plus, they are actually invisible, but they prevent the worst. Both physically and materially. And sometimes you have to give a little more so that you don't have to subtract a lot more later. a

Overall rating (445/600)

  • While not the best Mercedes in terms of driving, it is one of the most rewarding. As it also means a ticket to the premium world, as it is only slightly more expensive than the smaller A-Class, it promises even better times than its predecessor.

  • Cab and trunk (83/110)

Maybe someone else doesn't like the look, but we can't complain about the inside.

  • Comfort (91

    / 115)

The B-Class is one of the friendliest Mercedes, but with the AMG package and (too) big wheels, the test wasn't the most comfortable.

  • Transmission (53

    / 80)

    Basic engine, basic version.

  • Driving performance (69

    / 100)

Much better than its predecessor, not top notch.

  • Security (95/115)

Not only class S, but also small B are rich in help systems.

  • Economy and environment (54

    / 80)

It's hard to say that the Mercedes is an economical buy, but it's an economical choice for a base diesel engine.
