Grille test: Hyundai ix35 2.0 CRDi 4WD Style

Okay, for those of you who have barely skimped on a new car, this might be as simple as the base engine and base equipment. But there are not so many of them (every day there are more and more of them). And if money is not a problem, then of course the most powerful engine and complete set, but there really are not so many of them (they are getting smaller every day). What about what's in the middle? Better engine, worse equipment? Or vice versa? Four-wheel drive or not? What to pay extra for and what to live without? There are many combinations, especially for some brands that have accessory lists spanning multiple pages. And choosing a good compromise to make the driver happy at the time of purchase and during use is difficult.

This Hyundai ix35 gives the feeling that it is very close to the perfect combination. A powerful enough diesel engine, automatic transmission, a complete set that does not have unnecessary luxury, but at the same time is rich enough not to cause regret that the customer was too frugal when choosing equipment. And the price is decent.

So, in order: the 136 horsepower (100 kilowatt) turbodiesel is agile and quiet enough to be an almost unnoticed passenger. With it in the nose, the ix35 is not an athlete, but also malnourished. It's powerful enough to have plenty of range even at highway speeds, and fuel-efficient enough not to be put off by the combination of all-wheel drive (with the ix35's only front-wheel drive) and automatic transmission. On our normal lap, consumption stopped at 8,4 liters, and in the test it was a full liter higher. Yes, it could be smaller, and if it were not, the automatic transmission is primarily to blame, which sometimes shifts individual gears to higher gears for an incomprehensibly long time, although a turbodiesel would pull easily and economically in higher gears and at lower revs – especially when the road is slightly sloping.

There is enough space in the ix35, it is a pity that the longitudinal movement of the driver's seat is slightly longer, since it will be more difficult (or not at all) for drivers taller than 190 centimeters to find a comfortable position behind the wheel. ... Ergonomics? Good enough. It also assists with the color LCD touch screen, with which you can easily control several of the vehicle's functions using the hands-free phone and audio system.

There is also enough space on the back bench, the trunk too: no frills, but quite satisfactory.

The Style label signifies a beautiful package, including bi-xenon headlights, a rain sensor and a smart key. Sure, you can go even higher with the ix35, but do you really need a panoramic sunroof and heated steering wheel? Leather upholstery is on the list of optional equipment that can be omitted (especially since heated seats are standard, even if they are not leather), but the automatic transmission is not. So, it turns out that the Style package was chosen well, because apart from the surcharge for the gearbox and color, you do not need anything else. And when the buyer looks at the price list, where the figure is around 29 thousand (or less, of course, if you are a good negotiator), it turns out that Hyundai has obviously thought carefully about what they offer and at what price.

evaluation

  • The math is obvious here: there is enough space, comfort and a reasonably low price. Miracles do not happen (in terms of consumption, materials and workmanship), but the compromise between all of the above is good.

We praise and reproach

Automatic transmission

the occasional creak of plastic boxes between the front seats

the plastic of the center console is too easy to scratch
