Test: Suzuki V-Strom 1000 XT – Dr. Big got a successor

Suzuki rather late connected its big enduro to the motorcycle scene in the 800s and XNUMXs, taking its essence from African rallies. However, the large single-cylinder engine, which culminated in the XNUMX cubic centimeters version, won the hearts of all who wanted an engine that was something special.

Now, three decades later, little has changed. Road enduro motorcycles are modern and extremely useful, which is why they are popular, and Suzuki has managed to maintain a pretty good look that flirts with today's "youthful" classics. For those of you who didn't know, with the popular double roof or beak in front of the headlights, the first one appeared on the scene. Suzuki DR Largenot the BMW GS, which is the protagonist of this design detail today.

During the last update, the V-Strom 1000 received slightly improved electronics and an updated look, which is reflected in the XT version with a more off-road look. In addition to the spoked wheels, there are also reliable hand guards, more cosmetic, but still, at least for minor contact with the ground, a plastic engine guard is suitable. The combination of yellow, which is Suzuki's official color for motocross and enduro, is truly impressive.

Two-cylinder, 1.037 cc engine Cm it's capable of 100 "horsepower" which is certainly not overkill these days, but I have to point out that due to the beautiful torque and power curve it delivers a relaxed and dynamic ride. The precise six-speed gearbox works well with the engine, so there's enough power for two trips. But, as already said, he does not offer a surplus. The brakes are great performance and the engine weighs 228kg. The suspension and frame offer a good compromise between comfort and sporty stiffness for dynamic riding, as well as staying calm on the drawn line during long turns on the slope. However, he likes the relaxed tarmac more than the sporty turns.

As a fan of off-road driving, when I drove onto rubble and even a forest path, I was surprised how confident I was able to turn the throttle. I turned it off for maximum pleasure rear wheel slip control system (which otherwise works very simply and well for off-road driving) and opened the throttle all the way. At that point, all I wanted to do was put it in the off-road tires beforehand. On rubble, he drives around corners like a real enduro. I felt good behind the wide steering wheel and I have to point out the simple but effective Plexiglas windshield adjustments. For my height of 180cm, the wind protection as well as the sitting comfort was enough, but I think that higher level riders will have to help themselves with some accessories in the form of a raised seat and additional protection from the wind.

With a full tank of fuel, you will travel from 280 to 320 kilometers, which is quite acceptable for such a motorcycle. But best of all is its price and notorious reliability. You can get exactly what you see for 12.300 euros and take it with you on a winding journey into the Dolomites or along the dusty routes in the southern Balkans.

Bottom Line: This is a really great engine at a good price. If you're the type of person who isn't willing to pay around $ 20K for big touring enduro bikes, this is the best alternative.
