Test: Volkswagen Black Up! 1.0 (55 kW)

Grammatically contradictory car names

Until now, we were used to such marketing designations only on BMW when it came to their Mini, or on Fiat, where it was presented along with the Fiat 500 by the first seller at that time. Luca de Meo... But he got tired of the constant attacks of the great boss Sergio Marchionne and moved to Wolfsburg. To leave his first mark on how to make a small car attractive, he used Upa.

He added an exclamation mark to the name, and now Volkswagens should write version tags before the model tag. So, a real "blackout", a kind of blackout of the mind, we would say in Slovenian. But when we ignore the games around names and additional punctuation marks (we have abandoned them in the lyrics forever), we are faced with a new little Volkswagen that will darken the minds of the bosses of rival car brands. If until now it was believed that Volkswagen could make cars for "ordinary" Germans, the new Up proves that if they put in the effort, they can get lucky too. small car.

Longest wheelbase in class

The hardest part of the job of building a new car is usually the designers, but that wasn't the case with the Up. Since we have been able to observe the preparation of the smallest Volkswagen in the past few years, presenting various studies, now the final product with a three-cylinder gasoline engine and classic front-wheel drive is an amazing decision, although, of course, only logical.

Hope's dimensions are similar to those of the competition, and the length is somewhere in the middle. Debt is just right 354 см (Citroën C1 for example 344 cm, Renault Twingo after the new 369 cm). But brag longest wheelbase among mini subcompact cars, with 242 cm. The axles positioned in this way provide more space inside, which is a good purchase for passengers in the rear seats, where their legs still have enough room when moving the two front seats.

The same is on average with competitors. trunk “This one is as modest as we expect from this type of car, but it is flexible. With an extra floor that otherwise lies at the bottom of the boot (if whistling on the spare tire), it can also be split by placing smaller pieces of luggage under the extra floor, and folding the rear seat backrests gives you a higher level of hauling space two or more suitcases. So Up can be proud of its usability.

Purchased by VW

Appearance is, of course, a matter of taste, but Volkswagen's designers seem to have found the right amount of design simplicity over and over again. visibility they didn't need much ingenuity. Well, except for one thing, which is the front mask. This is not a classic one, with a large hole. Namely, they placed the surface on the air hole, so that only a kind of air supply frame remained in front, which we, of course, hardly noticed in our Up test, since the subject was one of the most equipped. versions with Black Up label.

Everything is like that in the car. dark shadesif not already black. Let's take a look at the exterior: the side view of the three-door Upa stops at the rear window opening, the lower edge of which “dynamically” rises, which is quite common in modern cars, thirdly, the tailgate. Maybe someone will deny that in case of an accident from behind there will be more costs, but the “enemy” will pay for it, and the more cautious will have an interesting look at Upov's backside, which looks quite elegant.

Overall, Volkswagen's focus on looks and the little things that make it enjoyable can be seen in the equipment of the Upova. This also applies to insidewhich is actually spartan if we focus on leaving a few sheet metal parts inside and even complementing them with a stylistically similar dashboard. In contrast to this simplicity, our time-tested Upa had the rest of the equipment, most notably the leather-covered seats. Up can be gorgeous too!

Less than three hundred euros for cards and more

It seems that it just suits him. Likewise, the solution to the persistent dilemma of large cars should be praised. to send, where you can read everything about the car, and you can also navigate in it. They named him “cards and more”, so maps and more. With this richly equipped black Upa, this device is already included in the price, but even in the basic versions where you have to buy it, the price is not really inflated - 292 euro... With it we manage everything well, not just the very complete navigation support, which speaks and has all the data also in Slovenian (the supplier is a subsidiary of Garmin Navigon).

At the same time, it also allows us Bluetooth connection to the phone, if it is smart, you can also play music on the Upov radio from it. So Volkswagen is also keeping up with the times! Moreover, the name of the device assumes the presence of many additional options, so, for example, we got a lot of pleasure from the program. “BlueMotion”which gives the driver an idea of his more or less wasteful driving style, and can also teach him when to change gears and how to drive more economically in general.

How does a small three-cylinder engine work?

Is it even possible to drive with such a small and "weak" engine? Seventy five horses It seems that this is not so much, but the car is one of the lightest, with 854 kg the engine does not have to carry a lot of weight (not with a "horse" behind the wheel). So it seems pretty nerve-wracking. But this is where Volkswagen's designers have also gone to great lengths to make the XNUMXcc three-cylinder pleasant enough to drive with maximum ease.

Has an engine maximum torque in the 3.000 to 4.300 rpm range, and the transmission has been adapted so that we do not need to drive it at high speeds (and increase fuel consumption) for normal driving. The use of lower speeds and therefore more economical operation is possible in almost 90% of all conditions on our roads. The exception is of course city driving шосеwhere when driving at the limit (at 130 km / h the engine is running at about 3.700 rpm) we reach higher rpm and then, as with all other cars, the consumption is much higher (indicated as the highest in our test data ).

However, Up is in our extended test cycle with average power consumption. 5,9 L by 100 km This is still much higher than the norm, but our driving style is more comparable to the real conditions on the roads. With Hope, in addition to sustainability, you can also achieve lower consumption, perhaps even below our lowest level. 5,5 L by 100 km.

Safety and equipment

What does Up offer, which is hidden under the sheet metal of the car and is only useful in the most extreme case, for example, in a car accident? With all systems already known, this is a novelty. city safety, a system providing safe automatic stopping at lower speeds. Slovenian customers of all UPOV will receive this system already in the basic configuration. With this device, a special sensor constantly monitors about 10 meters of space in front of Up, and if it detects possibility of collision, automatically causes the car to brake hard - to a complete stop. In addition to being able to prevent a collision, this system is also useful at higher speeds, as it reduces the consequences in the event of an accident with heavy braking. Such a system in the class of the smallest cars, of course, is worthy of all praise.

The new Volkswagen Up is definitely an amazing product that, given all its features, is sure to appeal to any buyer opting for a larger vehicle. An extremely pleasant arrangement will also help. chassisEven on difficult Slovenian roads, the Up provided comfort by smoothing out small and large bumps in the road. We only resent the hope that we need to get used to more noisethat comes both from under the wheels and from under the hood, but from there only if we pump it too much at higher revs.

Z lego on the road at least in winter there were no problems, if you do not take into account the fact that winter tires "hold" on a dry road much worse than usual, but even in corners the speed can be quite high.

Thus, the Volkswagen Up is not "blacked out" as the title of this text suggests. However, it will definitely attract potential competitors to many competitors, including those who might otherwise opt for the bigger ones from the family, for a Polo or even a golf course!
