Volkswagen (if you look at both the brand and the group) has been a bit of a competitor here for a long time - in fact, they only had Q-rated Tiguan and Audi models (not counting the big Touareg SUV). Then, in recent history, it just crashed. Fresh Tiguan, Seat Ateca and Arona, Škoda Kodiaq and Karoq, Audi Qs are fresh and they got their Q2 little brother… And of course, the T-Roc also hit the market.

Where does it actually fit? Let's call it the 4,3 meter exterior length class it shares with the Audi Q2. Slightly smaller - Arona (and the upcoming T-Cross and Audi A1, as well as the smallest crossover Škoda, which does not yet have a name), slightly larger - Karoq, Ateca and Q3. And in comparison with the classic cars of the concern? In terms of wheelbase, it's very close to the Polo and Ibiza, which of course makes it clear that it shares with them (and many of the group's other models) the platform it was built on: MQB or MQB A0 (which is basically just an internal code for using the MQB platform for small cars). Yes, the T-Roc is basically a Polo-based crossover, though priced more in the Golf class.

We're used to it: Crossovers are cars that allow manufacturers to earn more, as buyers have come to terms with the fact that they're more expensive (usually not much) than classic models of the same size, even though they don't really offer much. more that in terms of space and equipment, in terms of driving performance, usually even less. But if customers accept this situation and want to make the car more dynamic, easier to sit on and better transparency (well, not at all, but mostly the last statement is true), then there is nothing wrong with that. What.

The fact that the price of the test T-Roc with some accessories exceeded 30 thousand is not surprising, just as it is not surprising that the feel in the cabin, in terms of materials (and their finishes) surrounding passengers, is at a worse level than the Golf, which would cost the same. However, with the exception of the large, uniform top surface of the dashboard, everything else is quite easy on the eyes and less comfortable on the touch. The fact that the dashboard is solid doesn't really bother you at all - after all, how many times have you seen a driver feel that while driving? It would be better if the plastic on the door at the edge of the glass (where the driver's elbow likes to rest), for example, was not hard.

The monotony of the black plastic is very successfully broken by the color-matched hardware, which covers a beautiful part of the space in front of the driver. They rejuvenate the car and give it a more vibrant interior look that achieves exactly what the designers wanted: the T-Roc doesn't look cheap despite the plastic comments, especially since the Style hardware in the middle of the dashboard has (at least) 20cm (eight-inch) screen of the infotainment system, which is one of the best features of this car. Easy to use, transparent, with great graphics and screen quality, and more than enough features. It has no navigation, but the surcharge would be really stupid: it costs 800 euros, and instead there was a test system T-Roc Apple CarPlay (and Android Auto), which with the help of maps on a smartphone for a good one hundred euros more successfully replaces the classic navigation. The money we would have spent on this would be better spent on LCD meters (which cost just under € 500), but the test T-Roc, unfortunately, did not have them, so we had to settle for otherwise transparent and useful, but Na look rather outdated classic sensors with a monochrome LCD screen in between. It's a shame that the Active Information Display, as Volkswagen calls the LCDs, would fit perfectly into the T-Roc's interior and bring it to life even more.

Also, overall, the test T-Roc had a slightly awkwardly matched package. We will not complain about the 4Motion all-wheel drive: we have known it for a long time, it does not belong to sports, but it is practically invisible and quite reliable. Considering that there was snowfall in Slovenia during the test days, it came in handy.

A less successful choice is a combination of engine and transmission. A dual-clutch DSG instead of a manual transmission (which brings Volkswagen's too long-travel clutch pedal, making it difficult for many drivers to find a comfortable driving position) would be a much better choice (but it's true that Volkswagen demands an unfathomably large difference in price - from one and a half to almost two thousand), and the T-Roc, with its not-so-exemplary soundproofing, would be better suited to a gasoline engine than a diesel. The latter is a rather rough variety, more in the city, a little less at highway speeds, but never quite quiet enough not to disturb even the slightest bit - or have modern gas, hybrid and electric vehicles just spoiled us too much?

In short, a 1,5 TSI combined with an automatic transmission is a better and much cheaper choice (almost three-thousandths cheaper), but, unfortunately, it cannot be imagined in combination with all-wheel drive. So, if you do not urgently need it, calmly reach for gasoline with a gun; the difference in price is so great that slightly lower diesel fuel consumption will not outweigh it for long. Otherwise, you will have to choose a diesel (or a more powerful, but also more expensive and less economical 2.0 TSI). A positive point is the ability to select driving profiles. This does not affect the operation of the four-wheel drive (and the chassis, which will require a surcharge - a good thousand), but it does affect the steering wheel, accelerator pedal response, active cruise control and air conditioning. Ah, consumption: five liters on a standard lap (with winter tires) is more than acceptable, but according to experience with the Audi Q2, the petrol engine consumes only a liter more.

Back inside: the feeling (apart from the already mentioned noise) is good. It fits perfectly, there is enough space in the front, there is no storage space. Front passengers have (commendably) two USB ports (one is standard, the other is part of the App-Connect package, which includes Apple CarPlay and costs just under € 200), and the Style equipment also includes active cruise control (and therefore , multifunction steering wheel)), the aforementioned Composition Media infotainment system and automatic dual-zone air conditioning. Of course, the T-Roc comes standard with automatic emergency braking (at city speeds) with pedestrian detection. For the rest, including the Emergency Assist system, which not only knows how to brake on its own, but also helps with steering to avoid obstacles, you will have to pay extra ...

There is enough space in the rear seats (unless, of course, miracles are expected in such an overall class of cars), the same is with the trunk. Let's put it this way: two adults and one no longer small child can safely ride the T-Roc on daily (or short for several days) skis without having to put the skis on the roof rack. In fact, the T-Roc also has some handy hooks for hanging bags in the trunk.

The exterior of the test T-Roc impressed with the package, which includes a two-tone body (the roof can be white, black or brown, and the lower part of the car is mainly in metallic colors), but it is true that not only the combination of blue and white, but the shape itself ... The optional design package adds a bit more off-road accessories to the bodywork (along with LED reading lights and interior lighting), giving the T-Roc tested a sportier off-road look. And that's exactly what customers are usually looking for.

In the T-Roc, the buyer looking for a beautiful, practical and not too big crossover will easily find what he needs, especially if he chooses a combination of model and equipment more thoughtfully than was the case with the test T-Roc: then the car is everything. it will be better, richer and, most likely, even cheaper than the test one.

Overall rating (436/600)

  • There is no doubt that the T-Roc will become a bestseller and, at the same time, a vehicle that will generate significant profits for Volkswagen.

  • Cab and trunk (70/110)

Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the T-Roc is spacious enough to be used.

  • Comfort (95

    / 115)

The seats are great, the ergonomics are great, and the materials and noise are a little disappointing.

  • Transmission (52

    / 80)

A petrol engine paired with a dual-clutch transmission would be a much better choice for the T-Roc.

  • Driving performance (77

    / 100)

Volkswagen has found a compelling compromise between comfort and sportiness.

  • Security (96/115)

T-Roc boasts an excellent score in the EuroNCAP safety test, we criticize the lack of auxiliary systems in the standard equipment.

  • Economy and environment (46

    / 80)

Fuel consumption is acceptable, and the price seems (taking into account other characteristics) too high.

Driving pleasure: 4/5

  • Since there was a bit of snow under the wheels, and the four-wheel drive is convincing enough, it deserves four
