Test grilles: Škoda Superb 2.0 TDI (125 kW) DSG Elegance

Joke aside. The first Superb was Škoda's largest car shortly before (and also a few years after) World War II. This is also the task of the current Superb, this year it has been slightly updated and decorated so that it will last a year or two on the market before being replaced by the third generation of modern Škoda meters. When the new generation of Superb hit the market, it was a real revolution. Mainly because the Škoda engineers have developed something that transcends conventional automobile boundaries.

It makes sense that a large car is also expensive, but it doesn't have to be as spacious as it is long. Then the Czech designers took advantage of a slight negligence on the part of their leaders in Wolfsburg and made a car to the taste of four or five people who could easily drive it. Superb was developed primarily with the idea of conquering the Chinese market with it. Two details here, the look of the limousine and more backseat space, have long been important to the success. Even now, renowned car manufacturers for this market are presenting extended wheelbase versions to suit the tastes of China.

Too bad Superba did the same for everyone! It has a lot of space in the back seat and looks like a sedan (yes, the other version is also a van). An additional surprise of the Superb sedan is that it can be used with four or five doors at the same time. The double door is a patented Škoda solution. If you are putting small items in the trunk, just open the smaller opening, but if you want to load a larger box (the inside is too noble for boxes), just find the appropriate button on the back of the Superb (just above the top edge of the registration number slot) and open you will have a large tailgate.

The slightly updated Superb still offers all the benefits of a flexible body and spacious interior. Even the most powerful turbodiesel and dual clutch transmission have not been overhauled. This was not necessary, although the Octavia RS does now offer a more modern two-litre TDI with slightly more power. But a 125 kilowatt engine is as much as 170 sparks of "horsepower"! The dual-clutch transmission has all the characteristics of a comfortable brother with an automatic transmission.

For all these characteristics, the Superb is the ideal car for long and difficult distances. On motorways, including German ones, its high average speed does not give it any problems, and its fuel cravings have been exemplarily suppressed.

The interior has also been slightly updated and refurbished, and almost nothing has been touched on the electronic control system for various functions, such as the on-board computer, bluetooth preparation and navigation device. Some functions can only be accessed using the steering wheel buttons, while others can only be accessed using the buttons next to the touch screen or by using the on-screen selectors. If you know how to do it, no problem, but until then, those who are too simple with the simplified controls of more modern systems are surprised and ask for help (although, of course, this is easiest to find in the instructions for use - but it's so much time...).

The Superb came as a surprise in 2008 when the second generation first saw the light of day. Now we have refreshed our memory with it again, and it still feels as revolutionary as it did in the presentation.

It only has one higher level where you might be even more surprised (aside from the roominess and usability) and find that the purchase is even more worthwhile given the car's size - its name is a Combi.
