How to start a car mechanically
Let's say you recently passed your license, bought a car, and at a driving school sat down with an instructor in an already started car. Agree, the situation is strange, but this often occurs in practice, the instructors are not always interested in teaching ALL the basics, it is rather important for them to train them to pass specific exercises.
And here in front of you is your car with a manual transmission and you have a bad idea of how to start the car correctly. Let's analyze the sequence of actions:
Step 1: Insert the key into the ignition switch.
Step 2: Squeeze the clutch and put the gearbox in neutral (read the article - how to change gears on the mechanics).
It's important! Be sure to check the position of the gearbox before starting, otherwise if you try to start in, say, 1st gear, your car will jerk forward, thereby causing damage to nearby cars and pedestrians.
Step 3: When you put the box in neutral, the car can roll, so either apply the handbrake or press the brake pedal (as a rule, the brake is squeezed out with the clutch when the box is in neutral).
Thus, you squeeze the clutch with your left foot, apply the brake with your right foot and engage in neutral.
Keep the pedals depressed.
While it is not necessary to hold the clutch, it actually makes it easier for the engine to start, and on modern cars such as the Volkswagen Golf 6, the car will not start without the clutch depressed.
Step 4: Turn the key, thereby turning on the ignition (the lights on the dashboard should light up) and after 3-4 seconds turn the key further and as soon as the car starts, release the key.
How to start a car with an automatic transmission
With an automatic transmission, everything is much simpler. Initially, on a muffled car, the box is set to position P, which means Parking (parking mode). In this mode, the car will not roll anywhere, no matter if it is started or not.
Step 1: Insert the key into the ignition switch.
Step 2: Squeeze the brake, turn the key, turn on the ignition and after 3-4 seconds turn the key further and release it when the engine starts (some cars with an automatic machine can start without pressing the brake pedal), after starting, release the brake pedal.
Many people ask the question, is it possible to start in N mode (neutral gear)? Yes, you can, but it should be borne in mind that when you release the brake, the car may roll if it is on an incline. All the same, it is much more convenient to start the car in P mode.
