The purpose of the ignition switch

The main function of the ZZ is the synchronization of electrical systems during the start and operation of the vehicle. When the key is turned in the lock, the current begins to flow to the starter retractor relay, to the ignition system, to instrumentation and lighting devices, heater, etc. When the ignition switch is turned off, most of the electrical equipment is completely de-energized, protecting the battery from discharging. At the same time, the anti-theft mechanism is activated, blocking the steering wheel at its slightest turn.

The key in the ZZ VAZ 2107 can take four positions, three of which are fixed:

  1. 0 - "Disabled". The electrical wiring is de-energized. The key cannot be removed from the lock, the anti-theft mechanism is disabled.
  2. I - "Ignition". The engine sparking system, generator excitation, instrumentation, outdoor lighting, wiper blades, stove and turn signals are included. The key cannot be removed from the lock, the anti-theft mechanism is disabled.
  3. II - "Starter". The current is supplied to the starter. The key position is not fixed, so it must be forcibly held in this position. It cannot be removed from the lock.
  4. III - "Parking". Everything is turned off, except for the sound signal, side lights, wiper blades and interior heating stove. Removing the key from the lock activates the anti-theft mechanism. When you turn the steering wheel in any direction, it will be locked. In confirmation of blocking, a sound signal will be heard - a click. To deactivate the anti-theft system, insert the key into the lock, set it to the “0” position and smoothly turn the steering wheel in either direction until it is unlocked.

When descending the Zhiguli from the mountain or when driving at a neutral speed, you must not turn off the engine and remove the key from the lock. Such actions will lead to a jammed steering wheel and create an emergency situation on the road due to difficulties in driving.

On the new VAZ 2107, all the wires going to the ignition switch are collected in one plastic chip, which is not difficult to connect. To disable the lock, you just need to remove this counter. If the wires are put on the contacts separately, the connection should be carried out according to the following scheme:

  • the red wire (starter) is connected to terminal 50;
  • to terminal 15 - a double blue wire with a black stripe (ignition, heater, instruments on the front panel, heated rear window);
  • to terminal 30 - pink wire (plus battery);
  • to contact 30/1 - brown wire (plus battery);
  • to INT - black wire (dimensions, rear brake lights and headlights).

Ignition lock device

The ignition lock VAZ 2107 is a cylindrical body in which the larva and the contact mechanism are located, with a protrusion for fixing the steering wheel. At one end of the cylinder there is a recess for the key, at the other - contacts for connecting electrical wiring. Each key is individual, which gives an additional guarantee against theft. The castle consists of two parts connected by a leash. In the upper part there is a larva (locking device), in the lower part there is a contact group.

The lock

The ignition switch has two tasks:

  • the main one is the rotation of the movable disk of the contact device;
  • additional - steering wheel lock when the ignition is off.

Locking is carried out using a movable locking pin, which, when the key is turned clockwise, partially retracts into the lock body. When the key is turned in the opposite direction, the finger extends, and when the key is pulled out, the finger enters a special recess in the steering column. A loud click is heard.

For turning, a leash is used, which:

  • provides rotation of the movable disk of the contact mechanism;
  • fixes the lock in the desired position using holes, balls and springs.

  • a movable disk with conductive plates;
  • a fixed plastic pad, in which the electrical wiring contacts are fixed, having special protrusions at the point of contact with the movable disk.

When the key is turned, the plates on the disk close or open the necessary contacts on the block, turning on or off the corresponding units and mechanisms.

Diagnostics of malfunctions of the ignition lock

The VAZ 2107 ignition lock is quite reliable in operation and usually fails only due to the development of its resource. ZZ faults can be mechanical and electrical.

The key in the lock is sticking or won't turn

Sometimes the key in the ZZ turns with difficulty or does not turn at all. This is usually associated with a lack of lubrication in the lock cylinder - the movable disk with the plates begins to jam. Also, the cause of this situation may be damage to the working part of the key. The problem can be temporarily solved by pouring WD-40 water-repellent compound into the lock, and replacing the faulty key with a new one. However, after some time, the lock will still have to be changed.

The breakdown of the mechanical part of the ignition lock forces many owners of Zhiguli to change it entirely, since the cost of the complete lock does not differ much from the price of its secret part.

Devices do not turn on

If, when turning the key, electrical appliances do not start working, this may be the result of burning of the contacts due to loose pressing against each other. The situation can be corrected by cleaning all the contacts with sandpaper, and the connection point of the pink wire going to terminal 30 from the positive terminal of the battery should be tightened with pliers.

Starter does not turn

If the starter does not turn when the ignition is turned on, the reason for this is most often the burning or loose fit of the contact pair responsible for the operation of the starting device. You can check this with a multimeter, and fix it by replacing the mechanism responsible for distributing the current in the lock. The contact group can be changed without dismantling the ZZ. Before this, it is recommended to check the operation of the starter relay with a multimeter.

Lights and wiper do not work

When turning the key does not turn on the lights and wipers, you need to check the status of the contacts of the INT pin. If the lock is working properly, the problem should be looked for in other nodes - switches, switches, fuse box, etc.

Removing the ignition switch VAZ 2107 is quite simple. This requires only:

The procedure for dismantling the ignition lock

To remove the ignition switch, you need to perform a number of actions in the following order:

  1. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
  2. Loosen the screws securing the lower steering column cover and remove it.

Dismantling the ignition switch

In case of failure of the contact group, which is not repaired, but is changed entirely, it can be easily removed from the lock case. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Use a screwdriver or an awl to pry off the retaining ring and remove the contact mechanism.

Choosing a new castle

In this case, you can turn off the engine only by turning the key in the opposite direction.

In order for the button to stop the motor, that is, to turn it into a Start-Stop button, you need to use two additional relays:

When you press the button, current from the battery goes to the headlight relay, closing its contacts, and then to the starter. When the engine starts, the button is released, opening the contacts of the starter relay and breaking its circuit. However, the positive wire remains connected through the headlight relay for some time. When the button is pressed again, the headlight relay contacts open, breaking the ignition circuit, and the engine stops. To delay the starter on, an additional transistor is included in the circuit.
