As a rule, the factory security system includes a central lock that locks/unlocks the doors, and an immobilizer - a protective device that blocks vehicle components (usually the ignition or fuel supply system) in the event of an unauthorized start. The immobilizer is automatically activated shortly after the car is turned off, and the security is disarmed when the car key, which contains the chip, is connected to the ignition switch.
Of course, you can equip your car with an additional security system. What are security systems and what types exist?
Additional car protection is called an alarm or security system. There is a conventional division, according to which an alarm was called equipment that provides only opening/closing of the machine and a sound signal in case of unauthorized opening.
A security system is usually called more complex equipment, the functionality of which includes additional electronic and mechanical interlocks. Professionals still adhere to a similar division among themselves, although ordinary users have mixed concepts.
Types of car alarms and their difference from security systems
Car alarms with one-way communication
When you press the key fob button, the security mode is turned on/off. In case of a dangerous situation, the alarm emits an audible signal.
Car alarms with two-way communication
The LCD screen of the key fob displays information about what is happening with the car at the moment. A signal is received indicating an opening or attempt to start the engine. If there are vehicle position sensors, an alarm signal also occurs if the vehicle is loaded onto a tow truck. Manufacturers claim a signal range of 1-3 km. However, you need to understand that we are talking about ideal conditions in open areas. There are many buildings in the city; reinforced concrete walls shield the signal, and its effectiveness is significantly reduced. Therefore, in reality we can talk about several hundred meters.
Security complexes with satellite notification system
There is a GPS/GSM module in the car, and the owner has the opportunity to see the location of the car. The signal arrives via mobile communication channels; a phone or computer is suitable for control. Special mobile applications have been developed for some security systems. The functionality of such a complex can be increased. The following functions are possible: informing about unauthorized actions in relation to the car, remotely starting the engine or preheater, opening doors (for example, a spouse needs to take something from the car on the street), remote engine blocking.
Satellite security complex
In the event of an attempt to steal a car, an alarm signal is sent to the control panel. The engine is immediately blocked, and a rapid response team - a private security company or private security - goes to the car. The signal about a hacking attempt is received via GSM channels, so the weak point of such a complex is the “jammer” of the mobile communication signal.
Extended features
Most security systems have additional capabilities.
An immobilizer can consist of several parts (up to 7-10), which are integrated into the car's factory wiring and do not differ from standard parts. Installing such a complex is a labor-intensive process, during which the plastic casing is removed (the full list of necessary work depends on the make of the car). The criminal needs to find and bypass all parts of the immobilizer, which takes a lot of time.
An additional immobilizer removes the locks when a signal is received from the radio tag - a regular key fob that needs to be brought to the reader hidden under the trim.
Another level of security is possible - entering a two- or three-digit personal code using the standard car button. For example, sequential pressing of standard buttons - cruise control, RESET, power window, etc.
The immobilizer can completely block components, assemblies, or simulate a breakdown: the car starts and stalls after a few meters. The additional key fob (tag) is stored separately from the keys. In the case of a forcible seizure of a running car, the owner is usually pushed out onto the street. If the mark remains with him, then the car will not go far - it will soon stall.
Remote start. This feature has both pros and cons. On the one hand, it is possible to press the key fob button and in about fifteen minutes sit in an already warmed-up interior - very useful in winter. However, this reduces the car’s resistance to theft, since the functions of the immobilizer associated with the standard key are eliminated (as a rule, the chip from the key is placed next to the ignition switch). An alternative to remote starting is an engine preheater.
