Driving after lumbar spine surgery

From the article you will find out whether it is realistic to drive a car after spinal surgery. We will also tell you what precautions to take before getting into the car.

Driving after lumbar spine surgery - when?

At the very beginning, you need to realize that driving a car after surgery on the lumbar spine will not work right away. Such procedures are complex and require a long rehabilitation. Only two weeks after the operation, you can take a sitting position, which should be introduced slowly. The first 8 weeks are critical to the healing process, so it's best to avoid overexertion.

In the first two weeks, if it is really necessary, transportation in a car in the passenger seat with the seat fully reclined to the maximum recumbent position is allowed.

The second stage of rehabilitation - you can get into the car as a driver

Driving a car after lumbar spine surgery in the driver's seat is only possible after about eight weeks. During this period, you can increase the sitting time more and more, but only if necessary. The sitting position is always bad for the spine. It should be noted that the time spent behind the wheel does not exceed thirty minutes at a time.

After 3-4 months, the next stage of rehabilitation begins, at which you can return to light physical activity. Movement is very important for proper recovery, and in the case of spinal injuries, swimming and cycling are the most recommended activities.

When can I return to my pre-operative activities?

Your doctor will decide when you can return to active life. Driving a car after spinal surgery is possible after 8 weeks, but patients usually regain full fitness after 6 months. It should be borne in mind that this time can be increased or reduced, because it all depends on how you feel.

What precautions should be taken before getting into the car?

Driving after lumbar spine surgery is possible, but there are a few basic things you need to keep in mind. New activities should be introduced gradually and slowly. Before driving a car, first sit in it for a few minutes and check for pain. Try not to drive for more than 30 minutes, as a sedentary lifestyle is bad for your spine. Before driving, adjust the driver's seat to a comfortable position and ensure that the lumbar region is properly supported.

Driving after lumbar spine surgery is absolutely possible after about eight weeks. Remember, however, that health is the most important thing, and do not strain yourself unnecessarily.
