For this, you can get a fine of up to PLN 500. Especially now it's much easier. Early dusk, rain and fog make it less visible on the road. Now let's take care of the reflective elements as an indispensable element of our clothing.

According to official police statistics for 2020, 2 accidents were recorded at pedestrian crossings, which is 678% of all accidents involving pedestrians. 51,2 people died (197% of all dead pedestrians), and 31,2 people were injured (2% of all injured pedestrians). Most accidents occurred during the autumn and winter months, when pedestrians are much less visible on the road due to increasingly shorter daylight hours. In response to the growing need to solve this problem, an event called "Thinking Day" has been held in our country since 581 years. This is an awareness-raising campaign of the Polish police, the main message of which is to encourage as many pedestrians as possible to use reflective elements not only at night and outside of built-up areas, but also in built-up areas in unlit areas. or poorly lit sections of road. All this to improve the safety of pedestrians on the roads. In 54,9 and 2016, the Day of Reflection was organized in December - since 2016, the action has been held annually on October 2017.

When is reflection required?

In accordance with the provisions of the SDA, pedestrians walking outside settlements on the road after dark are required to use reflective elements in such a way that they are visible to other road users. Outside built-up areas, roads usually do not have separate sidewalks and may be poorly lit, and pedestrians may not be visible enough to vehicle drivers. On the other hand, cyclists must use headlights in front and behind the bike from dusk to dawn. This obligation applies to both built-up and non-built-up areas. Here reflection is also an important element of our security.

Penalty for lack of glare

For the absence of a reflector, a fine of up to PLN 500 is provided. The problem is that the legislator has not specified the type of reflection required for its use. Therefore, it can be a vest, a headband, or even a small keychain. The exact location of the reflector is also not specified. So, suppose that a pedestrian has a slight glare from the side of the road, which significantly reduces the chances of being noticed by the driver than if he had glare in front and behind him or on the side of the road.

Why are highlights so important?

The reflection makes us visible even in bad weather from a distance of about 130 meters. The driver then has time to react to our presence. The reflective element must be located in such a place that it is in the field of action of car headlights and is visible to drivers traveling from both directions (rear and front). Then it will definitely be safer!
